Tamara's Story
Life
Life has been and continues to be a grand adventure. Oceans sailed, lands explored, loves gained, hearts bruised, feet blistered, noses sunburnt. Although life has me travelling, I have kept the Northwest as my home base, and live in Seattle. I have no kids, pets, or spouse, but that's what friends are for. I am working on becoming the nutty red-headed aunt that all nieces, nephews, and friends' kids need. Only the hair needs enhancement, the rest is real.
College
After MPHS, I went to Germany for a year, then Shoreline Community College for civil engineering and photography. A three year hiatus, and I finished my BA at The Evergreen State College (yup-I'm a Greener Grad) where I was introduced to a sail boat, and the rest of my education has been at sea. Well - a good chunk of it.
Workplace
First of all - I have the utmost sympathy ...Expand for more
for telemarketers, as I did it for a week, and absolutely hated it. Even mucking out the sludge from the bottom of tankers wasn't as bad.
Besides the regular 'to pay the bills' work, I was a developer in a photography lab for three years, and during college was introduced to a boat. After two weeks as a volunteer on the Lady Washington, I was hooked, and while working as a mate, found out some ships pay. From an entry level sailor on a research ship, I am now working as a 2nd Mate on container ships, and as a bosun, mate, or master (captain) on tall ships.
Military
I haven't served in the military. As a Merchant Mariner, we are support for the supply ships, and I did four trips to Kuwait transporting military cargo. I was safe (mostly) but it was an experience talking to the men and women we brought home, and the vehicles they had fought in.
