Tamara's Story

I have been married 26+ years. I have a son, Samuel, who lives in the Bay Area again and just turned 24. He is currently bouncing aimlessly through life (he has to grow up someday. Please, God. ) My daughter Faith is about to have her 20th birthday. She is a college sophmore planning to attend Chico State or Humboldt for premed next spring. She's my overachiever. She recently told me that she considered me her best friend even though she would feel like such a geek if her friends heard that. Thanks Faith. I think. My kids are the best thing I've ever done. My husband is an engineer and works at the same hospital I do (we helped open it in 2007). We married in Phoenix, AZ, promised we'd never live in California, moved there 6 months later (1985)--money talks. So, I live in the SF Bay area and one day, I woke up and was completely shocked: not only did I live in California but I actually created 2 Californians. Never thought that would happen. I would imagine a lot of us ended up surprising ourselves. Somehow, I moved to Phoenix with my brother, met my husband, moved back to his home town in the SF Bay Area, and my dad grew up less than 20 miles away--I live almost where he grew up and he lives where I was born. The world is indeed a very small place. Books, coffee and chocolate are my vices. I like to make things with my hands and garden. I give all new technical things like cell phones, microwaves and cameras to my daughter to program them--I don't have the patience for figuring them out and it seems like that generation was born genetically wired for it : ). My passions are school and nursing. My joy is my family and my work. Dressing up is fun sometimes but I like my Levis. I have about 18 months left until I get my Master's degree in nursing and then I am planning to pursue a doctorate in education. I love school. I will either go into nursing education or professional nursing development, not sure which one yet. I was a stay at home...Expand for more
mom, ran a day care and took sporadic and eclectic college classes until I was 39. Went back to school, became an RN (love it, love it), currently working on my MSN. I eventually want to teach nursing or do hospice or both. Who knows? I really love my job. I work on a medical surgical telemetry unit, most of my patients are elderly and I absolutely adore them (they kind of look like Q-tips in the bed). I am particularly drawn to end of life care. It's hard and sometimes emotionally devastating but easing the anxiety, fear and pain in those situations is extremely rewarding. My work environment is probably one of the most culturally rich and interesting places I've ever seen. I get to eat all kinds of ethnic fare without going out: every continent except Australia. Life is good; I love my family and my work. My idea of a fun evening out is dinner out someplace decent but not too fancy--I like casual--with my husband (sometimes the kids wiggle into the car whether we want them to or not). I like short trips rather than long vacations. There's lots of other extraneous stuff but who knows what someone wants to know? I did this thing because I wanted to know what happened to my SHS BF Kathy Melvin. I only had to wait about 2 years before she finally showed up. I always find myself wondering what everyone grew up to be. My mom passed away in Wisconsin last June (2010). She lived with my saint of a sister almost to the end. I miss her. My dad still lives in Boise and I see him 2-3 times a year. My brother Bob was killed while driving his work truck; he never married but has a daughter (she has two little boys) and a son (he has a little one, too). I miss him so much, we were very close. My sister lives in Wisconsin, is married and has two girls (the oldest has two little girls) and one son. My brother Daniel lives in Illinois and just remarried; he has one son. Can't think of anything else but if you're curious, ask. I might tell you.
