Tammi's Story

Hi Gang! Wow time sure has passed by very quickly! I cant believe how many years have passed by since we were in school. Now the next generations in our families are attending the same schools we did! In the years after school, I held numerous jobs in the Law Enforcement spectrum. I skipped college and went straight to work... I worked for the Scott County Sheriff's Dept. for 5 years. I was a Correctional Officer in the jail. I was also on the Transport Team, transporting inmates to other facillities throughout Iowa and Illinois. About a year into my career I became an FTO, (Field Training Officer) and was entrusted to train and facilitate new programs to gauge improvement and certify new recruits. I also attended several FBI schools in Fingerprinting and was a Booking & Fingerprinting Officer for several years. Still a little curious as to what else there was besides good old Davenport Iowa, in August of 2000, I moved to North Carolina to work for a Law Enforcement computer software company called OSSI. I was a training specialist for 911 software, including jail management systems, CAD & records management systems, and also a evidence module that tracked and maintained evidence rooms with barcoding and a handheld Palm Pilot. I traveled all over the US to different Police Dept.'s, Sheriff Dept.'s and Jails, teaching and installing software. I returned to Davenport after realizing that my family was more important to me than any job. I now had 2 nieces, which I loved very much and enjoyed spoiling rotten. So when one of my clients I taught in NC offred me a job, I returned in September 2001 and worked at the RI Police Dept. for a brief time. I accepted a position as a residential counselor at Annie Wittenmeyer in 2002. At times I am not sure if they could tell the difference between me and the kids! I kinda adopted them as my own and spoiled them too! Working with the kids there was extremely rewarding, but I missed law enforcement very much. In early 2003 I began working for the Iowa Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer in the Anamosa State Penn. I stayed on as a part-time Lead Counselor at Annie Wittenmeyer and commuted back at and forth 150 miles each day. That didn't last too long, as I couldn't find a house or an apartment that wasn't either out in the middle of nowhere or had inmate's family members next door. (not too popular with them...they weren't too kind to prison guards) The town was just too small. Shortly after the long stay at the Corrections Acedemy in Des Moines, I returned home yet again. I guess some people just never stray too far from their roots. While working at Annie Wittenmeyer, I took on several other positions at various programs on the campus. I began working 10-12 hours a day in my own program, and working my days off volunteering in others. (I'm a sucker for kids) I absolutely loved this job and the people and families that I met along the way. It was probably the most rewarding and heartbreaking job Ive ever had, and one that will leave a lasting impression on my heart. In August of 2004, I was hired as a dispatcher for Davenport PD, and fell in love with the job and the people I worked with. I was finally "home." I thought that I had the perfect job before, but this one, I just "f...Expand for more
it" into so easily. Hard to summarize 12+ years...but that's my story... I had back surgery in Jan. of 05, for a disc that ruptured. I went back to the police dept. in April, and again in nov. I had yet another surgery and they ended up fusing my spine. I wasn't able to return to work due to a surgical error/neglectful action that left me with permanent nerve damage and in Aug. of 06 the police department deemed it was quitting time. They "retired" me. It was officially called seperation due to disability, but I sure didn't want any separation, none whatsoever. But when they had a Dr. evalute my job and the duties it held, the City of Dav. said uh no no. After yet more surgery in June of 06, and a trip to the Univ. of Iowa in Sept of 07, they found a cyst or tumor in my spine. As of right now they are considering non-cancerous. They believe it stemmed from the spinal fusion surgery when they placed a titainum cage in my spine and two titanium rods in my back. They injected some proteins to help my spine fuse with the metal, but the proteins didnt disolve as they should have, thus creating a tumor in the bone of my spine. That along with the spinal scar tissue has left me fairly immobile. I also had surgery on my leg due to nerve damage caused when the surgeon fused my spine and possibly nicked a nerve, regardless he left it untreated for nine months until it was seen by a surgeon on a thursday and operated on 2 days later. He gave a grim outlook on getting functionality back, but we are keeping our fingers crossed. I am fortunate enough to have found a very loving and caring man who has asked me to marry him just this Valentines day, (Feb. 08 ). Without him by my side to help me through daily tasks and assist me in the basics of life, I would be lost. Retirement, separation, whatever you may call it, is for me unfortunately the equivilent of disabled. I just hate that word. Expecially at 32 years old. But, it is what it is, and it makes you stop and appreciate all the things in life you have taken for granted. You take stock of your life every day and realize just how blessed you truly are. Well, enough of my story. I hope this finds all of you lively, healthy, and wealthy in ways you cannot measure by the dollar. Best wishes to all of you, and stay in touch when you can. Take care! Oh yeah, BE GOOD TO YOUR BACK, you'll appreciate it later, trust me on this, lol. Well, another update...as of March 29th 2008 I am now a married woman. It only took me 32 years and a couple engagements to find the man I'd always been looking for. I cannot wait to begin this new chapter of my life. Becoming a wife and a step-mom has been the most wonderful thing imaginable, and the only thing that can top it off is when we have a child of our own to add to our great family!!! Hey its almost a year later now, and Ive heard from alot of you! Its been great connecting and catching up with you and learning about the adventures you have had along the way. Im still here, mainly on the couch with a laptop, hee hee... but loving life and each of the challenges the new day brings. Hope the sun is shining on you and your families and that you have conquered your struggles and enjoyed your achievements. Best of everything to you all, Keep in touch gang!
