Tanya's Story

I got married before I finished high school, in November of 1984, to a wonderful, caring, loving man named Chris Keeter. He and I are still going strong today. After completing high school, I went to work full-time but soon determined that I didn't want to remain in a dead end job for the rest of my life. My husband was making pretty good money and paid for me to go to school. I received my Associates Degree in Computer Programming from ACC in Haw River less than two years later in 1989. Shortly, after finishing my degree, in March of 1989, I took a job with Orange County Schools as their TIMS Data Manager. This job involved mostly data entry, reporting, and monitoring. It was not what I went to school for. Thus, about a year and a half later, I interviewed with Carolina Steel in Greensboro and landed my first programming job in November of 1990. It was entry level and I was very green. I had to drive from Hillsborough to Greensboro everyday. I learned a lot but after having my first child, Malana in 1993, I realized that I wanted to be closer to home. I applied and interviewed with Elon College, now Elon University, and began working there in June of 1994. Elon was more of a family atmosphere. The employees were few so we became close friends with each other. I had my second child, Christina, in 1996 while working at Elon. In September of 1997, I heard about job openings for programmers at ...Expand for more
UNC-Chapel Hill. I wasn't really wanting to make a change at that time but I said, "Oh well, lets just see what comes out of it. I'll apply." A couple of weeks later, they called me for an interview. I was to interview for 3 different positions. I received an offer a couple of weeks later for almost twice what I was making at Elon. I accepted and started at UNC in November of 1997. UNC is a good place to work. I am a member of a small team of programmers that supports the Human Resources area. I have worked on many different kinds of systems there including mainframe, client-server, and web-based. The web-based systems are by far my favorite because of the many different technologies involved. I love programming because it is ever evolving. There is always something new to learn and never boring. My home life is very busy. I have a good husband and two teenager daughters. They are the light of my life and keep me busy. I am also heavily involved in my church. My faith is very important to me. Life has not always handed me roses, especially when my third daughter Grace passed away in 1999. It was a difficult time for our family. However, God has been with me all the way. He helped me get through that time and because of my faith, I have peace that someday I will see her again. There's no greater feeling than having that peace in your heart. You can find me on facebook if you're a member.
