Taras's Story
"Sharing my Story"by Taras Vizzi. Much of my story can be found at my website which includes an educational and professional biography which includes the only slightly dated photograph shown as part of my profile. As the name of the website implies, much of my life revolves around law given the fact that I am an attorney.
Nonetheless, I will give a short encapsulation of what has happened in the some 40 years since graduating Glenelg High School. Once I graduated, I never looked back. I attended what was then called Loyola College, where I majored in political science and became founder and president of the Young Democrats of Loyola College. (And yes, that is still my affiliation) I knew, even before going to Loyola, that I wanted to be an attorney and that desire was strengthened through the education I received at that college. Upon graduating from Loyola, I did a summer internship with then Congresswoman-later to be Senator-the Hon. Barbara Mikulski. Let's just say that Congresswoman Mikulski was as feisty as she was short. As far as my Washington DC was experiences concerned, I came away disliking our capital, and not because of the impossible streets to maneuver, but because of the constant and intense rivalries that seem to overshadow any relationship regardless of whether it was personal or professional. Washington DC is a city of egos.
But after that internship ended, I found myself working for the same corporation that my father had worked for many years, namely Bechtel Corp. To be frank, I was treading water at this corporation because it did not fit with what I wanted to be, which was an attorney. So eventually, I applied to, and was accepted to, both the University of Maryland School of Law and the University of Baltimore School of Law. I chose the former because of its reputation, and its reputation was that it was the more difficult of the two law schools.
For those of my former classmates who have children, or grandchildren, contemplating law school, I would simply give those children one piece of fair warning; ...Expand for more
law school will change you in ways that you cannot imagine, and some of that will be good and some of that will be bad. Also, you can never read a case "too many times" but you can always read a case "too few times.' I'm not going to say that law school was difficult in the academic sense, but it was difficult in terms of adapting to the intensity of the study which was necessary to succeed or at least do better-than-average. As a consequence, my first year almost was a disaster, but my last two years went fairly well.
Okay, enough of the educational portion of my story. I'm on my second marriage, and I have two beautiful daughters from my first marriage, Claire and Tara. They both attend St. Mary's College in southern Maryland, and they are doing very well and I'm very proud of them.My hope is that my money doesn't run out before they graduate. I married again in June 2015, and so far so good. Marianne is an executive with Avon, and she is a successful businesswoman in her own right.
For those of you who remember me in high school, and I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, you will recall that I ran both track and cross-country. About 12 years ago, I caught the running bug again and as a result I run 5K, 10K, and half marathons. I will admit, however, that as I've gotten older I have become much more selective in my running various races. As of the writing of this encapsulated autobiography, I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in Maui.
Occasionally, I have gone back to the area around Glenelg, and can't help but notice how much change has occurred. What used to be dairy farms and turf fields are now mini mansion developments and communities. Evidently, some farmers got very rich.
Well, if you are interested enough to click on my profile, I hope I have given you enough to satiate your curiosity about what has become of me. (And pardon the garbled syntax because I am dictating this off of my Dragon software) and with that, I bid you farewell and wish you well in whatever endeavor you undertake or find yourself in. Sincerely, Taras Vizzi
