Ted's Story
After Taft, I went to Pepperdine University, University of the Pacific, and finished 2 degrees in music therapy at the University of Kansas. I have worked in California, Kansas, Oregon, Minnesota, and Arizona at psychiatric hospitals and chemical dependency treatment centers. From 1990 to 2015, I worked at Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon, first as Director of Rehabilitation Services, and later as Director of Standards and Compliance. I have taught at Oregon State University (Strategic Planning in Healthcare) Marylhurst University (Psychology of Music), and at George Washington University (online course: Quality Improvement in Healthcare). In 2003, I completed my Ph.D. in Public Health at Oregon State University. I have been married for 48 years to Mary Candida Blackburn Ficken ("Candi"), who I met in Kansas. We have a daughter, Sara, who is married and living in Virginia. Sara and her husband have three children. Sara's husband works at DARPA. She is a nurse, working in outpatient surgery. f, returned from two and a half years teaching English in South Korea. He married his long time girlfriend, Shannon. He completed a master's degree in International Relations from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and now works at the U.S. State Department. Candi is an Occupational Therapist, and recently retired from working with pediatric clients. She has made three trips to Romania, with Northwest Medical Teams, to provide services to children in orphanages. I keep in touch with Taft friends who used to hang out at Zuma Beach together - the WVBA, or West Valley Bodysurfing Association. We had our own reunion in 2015 in San Clemente, and again in 2018 in Calabasas (before the Taft 50-year reunion).
September 13, 2020 I am happy to announce publication of a book I have been working on for several years: "Music of Hate - Music for Healing: Paired Stories from the Hate Music Industry and the Profession of Music Therapy," now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and by order at local bookstores.
