Ted's Story

I was born in Los Angeles at Good Samaritan Hospital; the oldest of four boys. I lived in Los Angeles, Monterey Park, and Alhambra. I attended elementary school at Emerson in Monterey Park, California, and Marguerita and St. Thomas More in Alhambra, California. Graduated from Alhambra High School in 1964. Went on to East LA College and Cal Poly Pomona, where I graduated in Civil Engineering in 1970. Having signed up for a Navy program in early 1964, I attended Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island and went into the active Navy until 1972. I remained in the reserves until 1989, working in surface warfare and amphibious operations. I also worked as a Civil Engineer for LA County, two private firms, and five Orange County cities. I fully retired in 2011. Melinda and I have two sons; Matt and Brett, who is married. They live in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara, respectively. We have lived in Dana Point since 1980, but that was preceded by Alhambra, Hawthorne, and South Pasadena. Along the way I volunteered as a Cubmaster, Boy Scout leader, youth baseball and soccer coach, Dana Point Cityhood mapping engineer, Dana Point Specific Plan Review Board member, President of the City Engineers Association of Orange County. I also had a serious interest in organized slo-pitch softball in Alhambra, El Monte, and San Jan Capistrano for about 25 years and for a while two nights a week. We have enjoyed travelling in the states snow skiing at Big Bear, June, Kirkwood, Mammoth, Heavenly Valley, Sun Valley, Park City, Alta, and Sundance and vacationing in Santa Barbara, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver. Travelled across the country twice; Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Gary (Indiana), Newport (Rhode Island), Cape Cod, Rock Island (Illinois), Davenport (Iowa), Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park (New York and Huntington Beach), Coney Island, Atlantic City, Wildwood, Philadelphia, Valley Forge, Washington, DC, Annapolis. nta Cruz, Santa Barbara, Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Clemente, Oceanside, Encinitas, Silver Strand at Coronado, Hawaii. I have always enjoyed listening to music; rock 'n roll and some other genres. Early along the way "Hound Dog", then "Great Balls of Fire", and then "Louie, Louie" were music high marks, with lots of nice pieces in between by Roy Orbison. There are about 150 hits from the 1950's that are still very nice. And there continues to be additional ones along the way by Link Wray, the Beach Boys, Sonny & Cher, Mamas and the Papas, Dick Dale, Dylan, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Seeds, Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Love, Iron Butterfly, Fleetwood Mac, 13th Floor Elevators, Ramones, Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground, Doors, Grassroots, ELO, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Guns & Roses, Tom Petty, REM, E St. Band, Joy Division, Pearl Jam, and just a few others. Movies I prefer are the old ones. Like "La Roue" 1923, "The Kiss", "Queen Christina", "Random Harvest", "Back Street" 1932, "The Music Box" 1932, "Penny Serenade", "Smilin' Through" 1932, "Love Affair" 1932, "Waterloo Bridge" 1931, "Between Two Worlds", "M", "Crime and Punishment", "Lost Horizon" 1937, "Topper", "It Happened One Night", "Razors Edge", "The Bishop's Wife", "The Grapes of Wrath", "Petrified Forest", and many others that really tug and entertain. "Out of Africa", "Gone with the Wind", "Moby Dick", "The Godfather I and II", "Dr. Zhivago", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Touch of Evil", "No Country for Old Men", "Ripple Effect", "Margaret", "Broken Flowers", and a few others. And television shows "Hopalong Cassidy", "The Lone Ranger", "77 Sunset Strip", "Maverick", "Gunsmoke", "Happy Days", "Mork and Mindy", "Mash", "Magnum PI", "Rockford Files", "Friends", "Seinfeld", and some others. I now enjoy going to the beaches, visiting family and friends, day tripping to the desert (only in March and April, maybe October), museums, historical monuments, hiking trails, and animal parks. That's enough for now.
