Ted's Story
I no longer subscribe to Classmates, so I cannot see who has visited or emailed, even when you sign my guestbook or post it on my page. You can find me on Facebook. Thanks!
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity...
Shot twice, stabbed once, 4 heart attacks, 5 way bypass, left hand severed/reattached, came within 24 hours of having my left leg amputated during Desert Storm. 2 helicopter crashes, 1 plane crash. Took a leak in the fountain at Franco's summer estate; beat his secret police running back to the ship. Ingested a truckload of asbestos. Jumped out of a 2nd floor window, naked with my shoes in one hand and my pants in the other. Came face to face with a shark, and out of air. Was a driver for then candidate Bill and Hillary Clinton. I'm the only guy I know who walks into a war zone just to get out of the house! Does this mean I'm not going to be a Nobel Laureate?
While the above is all for real (If said in jest), let me be serious for a moment. On my day job, I see patients from WW2/Korea/Vietnam to the present. They may be missing a limb or two, or blind, or with MS, MD, cancer, diabetes, alzhiemers, ACLS, parkinson's, or a myriad of other diseases; sometimes a combination of the above. Many are in detox, fighting substance abuse. Some have been there 60 years. I can deal with that, as the same could be true of others in their 50's-90's. However, what I cannot stand is seeing some once bright, beautiful kid, say 18-20, male or female that has had their mind, body or spirit destroyed by being turned into cannon fodder and looking at spending the rest of their natural lives there. Then it hit me: The ones there 60 years HAD been 18-20 year old kids when admitted. Plus we've had a female family member hit an IED last year. While I was super motivated after 9/11, the kids were my primary motivation to go back. While I could not get directly back on active duty after bypass surgery, I found a loophole which let me back in the Guard. I'd rather get the call, far better that I go than some kid. Also, while I suck at stand-up (And have the dents in my head from thrown beer bottles to prove it!) I can at least make the patients laugh or smile a little... Anyway, if you know a vet, or see one, thank them for their service. This costs you nothing, and could mean the world to them knowing someone cares. If you don't see one, thank GOD for their keeping you safe!
Secondly, by the grace of GOD I married the former LuAnne Miller (YHS '73) in 1977. Thanks Lu, for putting up with all my sh*t all these years. The toughest job in the Army/Navy is being a Army/Navy wife. Luckily I can still drive her nuts, and still make her laugh! We put both kids through the University of Tennessee cash and carry (whew!) and they only knocked a couple of decades off our lives in the process. Our eldest son, Jason, l...Expand for more
ives and works in Boulder Colorado. Our youngest son Jessie, and daughter in law Abby are in the process of transferring back here from Boulder for their work. Our daughter in law Abby has a full blown photograghy business. Check out AbbyGrayPhotography on the web. Her style is quite a bit like Anne Geddes.
And now, the rest of the story:
Been to 63 countries (But I think my kids have me beat there. Where did they get that from?). If you're watching CNN and see some knucklehead doubletiming in ACU's with hightops, a full ruck, a SAW, and puffing on a lit stogie, it might be me!
Sometimes my life has felt like a cross between Al Bundy and Forrest Gump! I've had my epiphany (actually several), but we're all a work in progress... Give me another 100 years and I might make it !
Retired engineer from GM in 2006. Got my Merchant Marine Card and worked in the engineroom of the Delta Queen Riverboat in New Orleans for awhile. Got some offers to go out to sea again, but too hard to keep the house up and be available for family when you're gone 3-4 months at a time...
Thought about going into mission work; hope I'm doing the next best thing: Working at the VA hospital in Murfreesboro TN and know 400+ patients by name and meet more daily; love helping other vets. Also working on 3rd pension to go with GM and Navy. You ain't gonna get rich at the VA, 1/3 the $ and 3 times the grief. But the "face time" with the other vets is sooo worth it. Plus it's a hoot being called "young man" by the WW2 guys! Still serving as a Chief Warrant 2 in the TN Guard. Just completed annual active duty in Georgia. Also work with Operation Stand Down, helping homeless vets with medical, dental, clothing, jobs, housing, counseling, yada yada yada... Also do some work at Hope House, a battered women's shelter; and Family Center, a food bank and service center for the indigent.
Play with my 1927 T roadster when I get a chance, and ride my Triumph Bonneville over 100 miles roundtrip to work each day. Hopefully I've grown up a bit. Waaay too much tarnish on that halo for redemption tho... I wish I hadn't been such an idiot back then. There's a lot of people I wish I could say "I'm sorry" to face to face. Really, I wish that I could have been the person then that I strive to be now.
These days, when my feet hit the floor, Satan says: "Oh crap, HE's up!"
What I would kill for: My family, at a rooftop resturant in Boulder; having a buffalo burger, sweet potato fries, a shot of Jack, a pint of Guiness, and a Monte Cristo, watching the sunset over the front range. That would be my perfect day... Oh, heck while I'm at it why don't I wish for 40 hour days,a 30 inch waist and be able to crack walnuts with my butt!
If anyone from YHS class of '74 sees this I wish you well! God is great!
Love to all ;) Ted
