TEDDY's Story

My parents and I moved to Salina in February 1963 in the middle of my sophomore year, after I had attended 18 schools previously since first grade. I was one of the Air Force kids from Salina AFB. Then, we moved from Salina the week after I graduated in June 1965 to Austin, TX where I began studying aerospace engineering at the University of Texas in Sept 1965. I drove back to Salina in August 1966 after my freshman year at UT to visit old friends for a week, but then did not return to Salina until our 25th reunion in 1990. I really enjoyed talking with old classmates that weekend, but did not return to Salina again until our 50th reunion in Oct 2015. The 50th reunion was quite a different experience – my closest friends from high school did not attend, several people I had dated had passed away, and the atmosphere was rather more distant than the warmer one 25 years earlier, perhaps not surprisingly. I participated in all the reunion events, including the tour of Salina High itself – it seemed very familiar, yet rather different somehow. The two evening events were pleasant but not engaging it seemed to me – 50 years I suppose is just too long to be disengaged from folks you only had spent two and a half years of your life with. During those 50 years, I had lived coast to coast and been involved in many things. After doing well academically, in 1968 I dropped out of UT, having become disillusioned with engineering. I then joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1968 after losing my draft deferment, but I re-enrolled that summer, but the draft board refused to reinstitute my deferment. In Dec 1969, I got married at only 22 years of age to a very sweet, beautiful, bright young woman, whom I had met at UT. But, then I was called to active Navy duty in Feb. 1970 and was stationed at the Naval Hospital on Guam for 2.3 years treating Vietnam casualties as a Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class. In 1972, my wife and I returned to Austin, and I reenrolled at UT, but this time to study psychology with the goal becoming a clinical psychologist. In 1974, I finally graduated from UT, and I went to work supervising a locked treatment unit for adolescents in a psychiatric hospital in Austin for 3 years preparing to apply to graduate school, which I began at the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1979. My first wife and I had divorced in 1977, and then I married my brilliant beautiful Sharon the next year in Austin and we have now been to...Expand for more
gether for over 40 years. Sharon also went to grad school at KU with me in 1979 to study English. We spent the summer of 1981 in Washington, DC, where I had a research fellowship, and then the summer of 1982 in San Diego, where I had another research fellowship. Our first son Corey was born in May 1982 in Lawrence, KS. In 1985, we moved to Ruston, LA where I was a professor at Louisiana Tech University for 2 years before escaping to Iowa State University in Ames, where I was a professor for 7 years. Our second son Devin was born in Ruston, LA in 1987. We both took faculty positions in 1987 at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1994, where we worked until retiring in June 2017. I spent those 23 years conducting a great deal of National Institutes of Health funded research and teaching medical students, residents and junior faculty how to conduct research, traveling frequently to Washington, DC and other sites around the country. I also became a bioethicist and research ethicist by training at the Kennedy Institute for Ethics at Georgetown University in, Washington, DC, and I served on various ethics committees at UNM for 17 years and directed the Ethics Institute at UNM for awhile. Sharon and I retired from full-time faculty positions at UNM in June 2017,both becoming Professor Emeriti. Sharon and I now love living in wonderful Austin, known as the Live Music Capital of the World and Silicon Hills and filled with more events and activities than anyone could imagine. We live just 10 minutes north of the University of Texas and downtown in an older tree-filled neighborhood near a large city park, centrally located near to everything. Our two sons, Corey, a musician and composer, and Devin, a medical-surgical-oncology registered nurse at Austin’s largest hospital, both moved to Austin soon after we did. In partial retirement, I continue to teach courses online for UNM and publish scientific articles reporting a lot of data that I accumulated over the years. Sharon continues writing novels, textbooks, and screenplays. Sharon and I travel often now with 15 out-of-town trips in 2019. We spent 16 days in London in May 2018 and 13 days on Sanibel Island, FL in May 2019. We plan future trips to Paris and central France, to Rome, Venice, Florence, to central Italy, and to Hawaii. We drive back to Albuquerque once or twice a year to work on projects for UNM, and we also plan a 4,000 mile western car tour soon.
