Teresa's Story

Graduated in 1973, was kinda a messed up class, because of the split with Homewood. After graduation I immediately moved to Mobile and started at Univ. of South Alabama. I could have chosen other schools, but I liked the idea of a port city and proximity to a beach. I continued to love music and hung around musicians and artists. In Mobile, I started running lights and sound for the theatre dept. and had a blast. Make that two. One day, in the middle of a quarter, a friend and I just decided to move to Charlotte. That was fun, too, but the tuition was high, so I came on back to Birmingham and finished up my BA at UAB. I didn't marry until I was 38. . .so .. that left a LOT of time to have fun! I travelled a lot, managing apartment complexes and doing many kinds of work. I ended up back in Mobile for another fifteen or so years, enjoyed Mardi Gras and the beaches, and worked at a musical instrument store for a decade or so. Now I am back in Birmingham, with my husband and two sons. I had my first at forty and the next at 41, so they are eleven and twelve now, they go to Hoover schools. I am having fun still .. .easy to spot me, I look very similar to way back when and my voice is still low for a female. My hair is still very long. Life is good! I continue to be non-conformist and vocal about it. My least favorite trait in people is predjudice, second least favorite is greed. I am politically Liberal, open and friendly. Probably vote for Obama this time, although I usually vote Libertarian Party. Religion . . hmm, well I think I made up my own blend. As a matter of fact, I do not believe any of us have all the answers to the Big Questions. I practice religion in my way, in my yard and home, and study religious writings quite a bit. Tibetan Buddhism is my current favorite and I am busy writing letters to Montgomery and Washington to urge a gentle persuasion of China to loosen its bonds on the Tibetan peoples. I also act as an advocate for my youngest son . .he was kissed by the Autism fairy . . .is a darling . . .and study of the human brain is another of my fields of interest. oning, but still quite a challenge. Miz Mackey would be proud that I have continued to read great literature over the years. I want to know all about how all of this came to be. The world is a beautiful and curious place and I study international relations and ancient cultures. I love space and keep up with science and technology fairly well. I study all the time! I collect rocks. All rocks. I have studied this particular field for so long that I could be called a "petraphile", or a "rockhead." I have thousands of specimens from every continent except Antarctica, plus lots of fossils, meteorites, shells, etc. Sherri Vines and I have remained best friends for all this time. She is still in Mobile, visits up here, and I run up and down I65 often visiting friends and my in-laws. Of course, since they split our graduating class in half, she and most of my buddies went over Homewood for senior year. I never ate lunch in the cafeteria. I always left the campus and ate at that little Mexican place nearby. There are a lot of people I would like to touch base with, some of you I even knew in Grammar school at Shades Cahaba. Besides Sherri, I remember hanging out with Bob Parker and Dexter Hambaugh a lot. I wish I knew what has happened to a bunch of folks. I loved Abby Daughtery, but I know she passed away years ago. I think I'll dig out the old annual and see if it reminds me of anything . . .I'd like to know where Susan Bogs is, Karen Keith was my friend, and Melanie Brown flat disappeared. I have heard bits about Brenda Satterfield, Brian Shaw, and Nancy Bethart. We had a good mix of kids back then, and I liked very many of you. I was not a Rah-rah, never went to pep rallies, and dressed in jeans. Remember my yellow Duster car . . it zoomed! But it was so eye-catching I was caught skipping all the time. There was a cool lady named Joyce who was a counselor, and, heaven knows, I always wanna talk. She still lives, I believe, and my mom has contact with her through Bridge Tournaments. I kept myself entertained at Valley, lost a lot of brain cells but gained millions more . .touch base if you can . . .
