Teresa's Story
Life
My Kids -- I have 2 sons: Damien born in 1984 is a physician's assistant and runs a "minute clinic" in Spartanburg SC; Andrew born in 1989 is in college and is still trying to decide what he is going to do in life.
Two terrific boys who have convinced me that I was lucky to grow up in the 1960's-1970's. I was speaking with my youngest son (age 21 college student) a while back and we compared music from my youth to his. The Beach Boys "Wouldn't It Be Nice" compared to Celo's "F#*k You" kind of sums it up! The 60-70's were a kinder, gentler time and the cynicism we face today wasn't thee when we were kids and teenagers.
My Job
Since Summer 2002 I have been an Interactive Video Training Instructor for the Social Security Administration. That means that teach new employees to do the job I used to do and I get to teach them via closed circuit television. I was an interviewer for Social Security Admin for over 20 years. So I heard and seen just about everything! It was part social worker, part counselor and part psychologist! Now my job is just lots of FUN. I finally get to use those skills I gained in Drama club and the Thespians.
UPDATE: Since July 2009 I've been living in Tuscaloosa AL. I moved here to care for my mother after my father's death. Unfortunately she passed away shortly after I moved here. I still work for SSA and I plan to retire in 2013, after my youngest son competes college. I am hoping to move to SC and live on the coast when I retiree. I have plans to begin writing. After 30 plus years in public service I have lots of stories to tell. I also hope to have grandchildren to spoil, but thus far that seems a long way off...
School
School, from kindergarten through college, was a wonderful experience for me. I guess what I treasure most are the memories of growing up with the same kids throughout my school years.
If I had it to do over again, I must admit that I would be less academic and more social. Some of my best memories are from band--band camp, Thursday night rehearsals, football games,"hookie pookie", "mooneyack's" and the kookie, terrific friends with whom I got to share it. Of course school plays were a blast too! One moment I will never forget is being Lucy on "You'...Expand for more
re a Good Man Charlie Brown". Of course there are some great memories from the classroom too!
And the characters--both kids and adults who shaped our school leave indelible marks in my memory too: Mr. Cole, Mr. Hillis, Mr. Malling and Mrs. Arthur to name a few.
College
I went to OSU and lived at home. It wasn't as exciting as living on campus may have been, but I was able to go year round and complete two degrees in 3 1/2 years. My best memories of college include OSU football games and Block O parties. I still get a lump in my throat when I hear "Carmen Ohio".
Workplace
Other than part time retail jobs while in college, I have worked all of my adult life for the Social Security Administration. I spent most of my career as a claim representative taking and adjudicating claims for benefits. Not too exciting but it was a secure job in a not so secure economy. Fortunately in 2002 I moved to Atlanta to become an IVT (interactive video training) instructor. So now I get to teach (something I love to do), as well as create and perform. All the training I do is presented via closed circuit TV, and I have learned so much about television production that I am thrilled to go to work each day! I have finally found my niche, and I hope to continue with this position for many years.
Since moving to Tuscaloosa, I am back to interviewing the public and doing some training part-time. I also mentor younger employees and I love that aspsect of my current position.
Personal Life
I married in 1980 and divorced in 1997. Even though the marriage didn't last, I do have two wonderful sons from that union. I am currently waiting for George Clooney to come and sweep me off my feet...but until that happens I have great friends with whom I share fun times!
I have lived in the Cleveland area, Atlanta, rural SC and now Tuscaloosa AL--so I've had a varied home life. I want to move to the coast of SC when I retire to enjoy the sand and surf.
Future Goals
When I retire, I am planning on writing. I have started several screenplays, but they are still in development. I have gathered wonderful anecdotes and stories from years of dealing in the public sector. I hope I can see some of my ideas and screenplays come to fruition.
