Teresa's Story

After graduating I went straight into college where I obtained a (BSN) in nursing. I had always wanted to be a doctor but it wasn't in the cards. The day I graduated from IUPUI I was sworn into the US Army. I was wanting to become a nurse anesthetist, again I fell short. So I became a Surgical ICU Nurse. I served at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio TX, BAMC for short. I was married and became Mrs. James H. McKenzie. I then served at Hayley Army Medical Base in Indianapolis, Indiana. I left the army with an honorable discharge, after giving birth to our first son. I was afraid that I would have to go abroad because of the war and leave my child. I am a veteran of the brief Panama conflict and Desert Storm. I gave birth to my second son and unfortunately got a divorce. I obtained full custody of our children since I had a stable career. I raised my children, James and Justin mostly by myself. Over the years ex-husband and I tried on an off to rekindle what was lost. I never remarried, I dated here and there when they started high school. I did not want my children subjected to different men. When left the military I worked at Methodist recovery room (PACU) for 9 years in Indianapolis. I worked in a couple of hospitals,in different settings. I love being a nurse. Before I left the military I became ill. They did not know what was wrong but they had an idea. The years past and I became ill and was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus. I was stable until I 1999. Stress played a big part of my problems. I became very ill and had to stop working. The VA recognized the fact that I had an inflammatory disease that was documented in my file so t...Expand for more
hey take care of my health, but I do carry Medicare and a supplemental insurance. In 2010, I moved back to Bloomington to be closer to my parents and siblings, in case I got too sick to finish raising my children. I left the house I had built for us. I thought that we would be in that house forever. Now I live in a rented home because I hate apartments. I would like my own home again. Right now I am 100% disabled by the military, Social Security and a long term health insurance. My youngest son lives with me. He was a premie weighing a whopping 2'11"when he was born. He had bleeding in his brain, causing a mild case of Cerbral Palsy, CP. He gets severe migraines that he has had all of his life. There is a few things I must teach him before I can send him out to the world. My other son lives with his girlfriend and her mother because I am too strict. He wants to do what ever he wants. He feels that a man shouldn't live with his mother. I agree, but he needs to learn a few lessons. He did not finish high school. He had a learning disiablity and he was lazy. Not to mention, he hated school. But he took care of me when I was sick. He also helped his brother. Both of my kids had ADHD. I want to go back to work but I have too many health problems other than Lupus. I am doing better. I am off the narcotics the VA put me on. Now I am out of the fog but I still have pain every day. I am back in church. I believe that God has been working in my life. He wants me for some purpose that I do not fully understand. Without Jesus in my life I would have been dead along time ago. Bless His holy name. There is no stopping Him and what He has in store for me.
