William's Story
Life
BA in Music/Sociology Morningside College 1976
MA in Organ Performance University of Iowa 1979
Currently Director of Music and Worship, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Stevens Point. Married, 2 boys, 2 girls.
School
I was the brooding artist in school. I had no social life, and I never dated. Most people thought I was odd. This is because I was single minded about music, especially composition and church music, and my greatest inspirations were Rev. Robert Scoggin, and Janet Sheryl Woods, who has gone on to sing professionally. I will be forever grateful to these two.
College
I spent more time trying to avoid being drafted than I did studying. Never the less, I did manage to pull off a fantastic Senior Recital. The party afterward was fun too! After the Army, got a Master's degree, courtesy of the GI Bill.
Workplace
I played at 1st Baptist in Sioux City for a year from 1968 to '69, played for Christian Scientists (on a marvelous old Skinner organ) from '69 to '72 when I was drafted. Worked at 543rd Ordnance Detachment from '72 to '74 and played at the Post Chapel. Returned to Sioux City in '75, played and directed at Central Assembly until got a call from Augustana Lutheran Church. Stayed there two years and went to Grad School. In Grad School, I played at St. Paul's Lutheran (LCMS) in Williamsburg. in '79 I sumultaneously landed jobs at Trinity Lutheran Church and the City of Sioux City. In '95 moved to Wisconsin to work at 1st UMC. Lasted 2 years and fled to St. John's Episcopal Church, got a call to St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Slinger in 1999, stayed there for 4 years and got called to my present position at St. Paul's UMC.
I am also finding myself doing a lot of private teaching; violin, viola, piano, organ and voice, and I volunteer time at one of the local schools to assist with their or...Expand for more
chestra program. Of course, I recruit from the best of the students for my own orchestra which I've developed for St. Paul's UMC. My latest venture is a hymn festival in honor of Charles Wesley's 300th year. I dress in costume as Charles Wesley, complete with white wig, black pulpit robe, tab collar and British accent and travel around to the United Methodist Churches in our area with a festival of Charles' hymns and stories of his life. (And it was colorful indeed!)
Military
Being the last draftee out of my local board in Rochester, Minnesota, I had no choice as to where I went, so after finishing basic and AIT at FLW, I was on orders for the Panama canal - endless parties, half day work, full day pay, and best of all, no uniforms! I decided to visit the Post Chapel before I left, and asked to try out the organ. After playing some Bach and some Dupre, I was asked to sight read the Dubois 7 Last Words, which I did flawlessly. Then I was asked if I wanted a job. I told the choir director that it would be nice, but I was on orders for Panama. He said, "no problem". It was then that I found out about the power of the Secretary of the General Staff, Maj. Al Mitchell. So I spent two full years at the 8th wonder of the world - Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri - the only hole in the world above ground. One redeeming feature, at least they had a pipe organ in the chapel. Seriously, Al was fun to work with, and I missed him after he left and I inherited the choir.
I always wanted to be a scientist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.

I relax by going for long walks in the woods. We're only a couple blocks from a game preserve.
