Teresa's Story

Life Wow......It's hard to believe how many years have past since graduating from NDSH. Seems like only yesterday we were feverishly cramming for exams, going to football games, planning our float for homecoming(and yes everytime I hear "Put 'em on that Midnight train to Georgia I think of those days.) camping out in the mountains with Mr. B's science class. After graduating from NDSH I moved to Wilmington to attend college. That first year was crazy being on my own, living in an apartment, adjusting to big city living (at least it was big city compared to Midway.) After earning a tennis scholarship I moved into the dorms and was able to experience the joys of dorm life. I graduated in 1979 on the four year plan wishing I could have stretched it out a bit ha ha...those days were great. I loved Wilmington so much I decided to stay in the area. After graduating, I began teaching in the public school system in a TMH class. I loved working with the trainable mentally handicapped but after four years I was transferred to a middle school EMH class. That is emotionally mentally handicapped (a nice way of saying "I don't want these trouble making kids in the mainstream disrupting my class. Having a self contained room full of disruptive, behavioral problems and an administration that wasn't supportive was more than I had bargained for so I left in favor of a non profit I had worked part time for while I was in school. I stayed with Family Services for about 20 years total and became director of one of their counseling programs. Although, I loved what I was doing another opportunity presented itself and I left in 2001 to become my own boss. (that means going from 45 hours a week to 100 hours per week) I have one child, a daughter that was born in 1985. She has been a great joy in my life. Of course, she has caused me much sorrow as well, but the blessings far exceed the concern and worry I have experienced. I was married for 17 years but divorced in 1996 ...Expand for more
and have remained single since. It seems, I not very good at relationships ......"my Picker seems to be broken". It seems for the men I chose, that the grass was greener on the other side until they munched on it? I've done a bit of traveling and would love to do more once I quit working so much. I've gone to Australia, Spain, Italy, West Indies, and have been fortunate to travel throughout the US as well for business and pleasure. My favorite place I think was Venice, with all the romance, architecture and history there. My dream this year was to go to NY to see the "WINDOWS" at Christmas but because of having to make a couple of trips to California that trip had to be cancelled. I had almost decided not to do Christmas this year because of the circumstances and some tragic events but I began thinking, you never know what next year will bring. Right now I'm in the midst of the Christmas decorating madness. My daughter thinks I'm crazy for putting up 10 big trees and decorating every room of the house but I just love the season. Ive collected so many things over the years I can't bear to let them sit unused in an attic.I did run out of time this year with all the turmoil going on and had to hire someone to do the roof lines and outside decor. I have a cat Marley, that I inherited from the daughter. When the daughter moved back home she brought with her Sir Silas the german shepard. I had to buy him a 8x10 playhouse to use as his home because of his size--90 lbs and growing. She also has Jazzy, the horse to take care of, so we stay busy with the animals as well. Fortunately the community I live in is equestrian with more acreage than most developments. I have almost 6 acreas to stretch in. For years I lived in a development with half acre lots and hated not having privacy. I don't make it home(Lexington) much anymore, (shame on me since dad still lives in the same house I grew up in)but he visits about once a month. He loves to work at the stores.
