Teresa's Story
I guess I've been a real curmudgeon not keeping in touch for all these years. It seemed something was always going on about the time of a significant reunion--extra busy at work, something with the kids. So it doesn't seem possible it's been what, 37 years???
The day after I graduated from high school, Dad had all of us loaded up with a travel trailer behind the car and we were on our way to Alaska for his last duty assignment. Can you imagine a Chevrolet jammed with five kids, a dog, a cat, and a chain-smoking cranky woman in the front seat? It was a brutal trip, let me tell you! ha! At the Canadian border, they asked Dad what was in the car, and he told them, "Five house apes, a dog, a cat, and a pissed off wife." The agent just told him, "Go on thru you poor bloke."
Frankly, it was pretty awful to move from Texas to AK for the first winter. We were all sunlight affective and Mom started menopause...yikes!!! Boy, did we need a sunny vacation in Hawaii or something. That didn't happen, but we managed to survive the first winter!
I spent most of my time in Alaska, where I love the long days of summer, but the dark, cold winters can be really torturous. I had an insight when writing to Teresa Sinclair awhile ago...I really like having a home and don't like moving (maybe after all of Dad's time in the military.) So, maybe I was just too lazy to pack???
Let's ...Expand for more
see, long story short: I married (I'll admit more than once) and have three sons with the last two being twins. I attended the University of Alaska Anchorage and worked for the State of Alaska in several different jobs over the years which kept things interesting. I took an early retirement and now we spend summers in Alaska. We bought an old house in SD that we're remodeling (a major project), then an old restaurant building we want to turn into a shop/gallery/studio or just storage if we don't get with it (a really HUGE project that'll keep us out of trouble) and from here we can visit the family.
I lost my mother in December 2007 to lung cancer, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time with her in her last days. Then I just recently lost my best friend to the same disease this month. It's been a tough few months.
So, I guess here we come to it. It's a sense that our time on earth is limited. I might feel young, but things are definitely reminding me that I'm about to qualify for that senior citizen breakfast menu at Perkins Restaurant!
So, how have you all been? I hope life has treated you well. I really feel I've been blessed in many ways.
Hope to see some messages on the board--it's looking kind of skimpy. It's really kind of sad that I'm on the frequent poster list, and I've only written one message, so you guys, share some news!
