Teresa's Story
I just bought a 2009 H-D XL 1200N Nightster. It's been 17 years since I operated a motorcycle, and I'll be taking a refresher course. My stomach is all in knots, I'm so excited! My father and 2 of his brothers were in the Black Hawks Motorcycle Club after WWII, and I inherited the gene making that life seem attractive to me. Go figure. My brother, Kenny, did not have any interest in it. I remember, when we were little (8 and 11), our Dad would take him to the motocross in Copetown, and he'd cry and cry cause he didn't want to go, and I'd cry and cry cause he wouldn't take me instead. Forced gender typecasting. Luckily, it all sorted itself out later in life. I got my first motorcycle back in 1974, a Suzuki 125 Twin. ha ha. Dad taught me how to ride in the field that used to be beside my house, where Cedar Street goes all the way through now, and where Fern was just a swamp with a stream running through it. I remember taking it down to A.L. Choppers to have something little done to it, and there were all these Wild Ones hanging around in the parking lot. To see me riding up on that little sewing machine must have been quite funny to...Expand for more
them, I was so intimidated. Then, in April 1975, riding behind a friend on his Honda 550-4(?), we were involved in an accident at the corner of John and Main. My Dad stayed all night with me at the hospital during my surgery. Broke my left leg in 2 places, tore up my right knee, lost 25 pounds in 4 days, couldn't eat solid food for 6 months. I can tell you now if it's going to rain. Time passes, marry, Honda 400 Semi-Automatic. Real ladies' bike, no shifting required. Stolen from right in front of my house in Hamilton. Then, last bike was Yamaha 650 Maxim. ex husband painted it Candy Apple Blue, gorgeous. Drove oldest boy to JK on it, the kids would get such a kick out of seeing Lee's motorcycle mom. After 2nd son came along (divorced by then) Dad worried about kooks on the road, didn't want my boys to become motherless so he convinced me to give up riding. 17 years later, here I am, kids grown up, older boy has Sportster of his own, younger boy not interested at all, more into music. And me, having fun with this second childhood thing, better than the first time around! Picking up my new bike this Friday, April 17, 2009. YIPPEE!!
