Terri's Story

I got married May 17, 1986 to then MT1 E-6 Thomas F. Kiley. Together we have 3 children, Thomas, (Dec. 1986), Kathleen (May, 1988), and Christine (Oct. 1991). I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007. Since then it has gotten worse in some areas and better in others. I still cannot walk or stand and am dependent on a scooter and wheelchair for mobility. That has not stopped me and I refuse to feel sorry for my current situation. I am well aware that I am dying, but that does not mean that I need to give up on my life and wade in self pity.. I do not expect anyone to do everything for me. I am afraid that I am too self reliant for that. LOL!! I will do everything physically possible in order to help others instead. Last July we sold the house in the desert of Benton City, WA and relocated to the mountains of WA near the Canadian Border. 12 miles away, in fact. Benton City's heat and arid climate was exasperating my M.S. and killing me faster. We took the proceeds from the sale of that house and put them into the purchase of this house. We have upgraded to 20 fully fenced acres with a yearlong creek running through the middle and a guest house. We have adopted 3 orphan foals and are taming and training them. This place was designed to be self sufficient which is exactly what we wanted. We love this! The people here are friendly, warm and helpful. They do not expect anything for helping one another than that the one helped returns the favor when needed.. For anyone who knew me, they might remember that I have always wanted a self sufficient life in the mountains. We are now half a mile off the road. No more people staring through the windows or pulling up the driveway just to use it as a turn around. We are 45 minutes from the nearest Walmart,, 30 minutes from our daughter and her family and about 20 minutes from our new home town. Our driveway is called "primitive" because it is nothing more than a dirt road made from constant driving on the land.. We need studded tires in the Winter just to get up t...Expand for more
he driveway incline because in the Winter we can get up to 4-8 feet of snow. We have a metal roof that does not leak The rain sounds so cool and relaxing beating on it. Did I say that we love it here? I drive my scooter up the driveway to get the mail. Rarely do I see a vehicle on the road. It is so peaceful and quiet here. When we have the Grandkids over, they can play in safety and make as much noise as they want. They scream as loudly as they can just to hear their voices echo. They take Walkie Talkies up the hill and play in the horse trailer without needing supervision yet the Walkies provide constant communication. We are even setting the guest house up for their private Summer Camp. They love the freedom here and even play in the creek. They, too love it here. We have resident Hummingbirds, White Crowned Sparrows, Falcons, Hawks, Bad Eagles, Golden Eagles, A Blue Heron, Wild Turkeys, Red Headed Woodpeckers, Weasels, Chipmunks, Deer.... This will be the first place in our 37 years of marriage where WE get to determine the landscape. The people who had this place before were fellow farmers and as such, did minimal landscaping. This place is a clean slate and we have already planned the color scheme and the flora. Tom loves this lifestyle, which surprised us both considering that he grew up close to New York City. I am glad that he is now retired and can sit outside and finally stare at the stars without the glare of the street lights and the background lights from the nearby town and city.. Out here, it is just you and God's glory. Who could ask for more? We have come to terms that I will die here and that this is the last place we will live. If I have to die, thank God it will be here where I can live a peaceful life in my own little slice of Heaven. I am more involved with living my life here and enjoying our home. I wish all of you happy and successful lives. May your path lead you to happiness, love and fulfillment. Please don't waste the days and opportunities that God sends you.. Love, Terri
