Terry Schwartz:

CLASS OF 1959
Paramount, CA

Terry's Story

After graduation I went to Compton College for one yr. Then read meters for Edison for one yr and took night classes. Then back to school full time, Long Beach CC for a semester. Bored and no direction. Went to the Draft Board and went into the Army in l962 for two years. I thought after the time in the Army I would know something and have some direction. I didn't. I went back to LBCC for one year and then went to work delivering milk to stores for one year and then to the Shell Oil Refinery for two years. I got married in l965. As usual with really no definite goal in mind I got on with the City of Inglewood Fire Dept inn l968 and stumbled into the absolute perfect job. I retired in Dec l997. Over the years at times I couldn't believe they were paying me to do all the exciting things I got to do. I was a Paramedic for four years. Rank of Engineer in l974. A full time Arson Investigator for l9yrs, a Bomb Tech for 14yrs and my last two years on the Haz Mat team. Got my AS degree in l973. I have been married for 44yrs and had the good fortune to marry someone that gave me room to grow up. It takes fome guys longer than others. We have two daughters, who after the usual line of deadbeats, married two good guys the I really like. Three grand children. Two (boy 6, girl 4) live six houses down the block. ...Expand for more
You need to stay in shape to keep up with a 6yr old. After high school I got involved with tennis and golf. In l970 I won the City Of Long Beach Open Tennis Championship and got down to a 7 handicap in golf. I dont't play either anymore. After I became a Paraamedic, being out there in the streets (Inglewood was and is a pretty dangerous city)all the time, I thought it would be a good idea to learn some self defence techniques. I knew I wasn't very tough and I couldn't fight very well. I began studying a Chinese combat style martial art (San Soo) and attained a black belt eventually. I do some type of exercise each morning ( the worst, thing as you get older is to get left behind). My luck has held all thru the years, I didn't get burned up, blown up or shot while on the job, and with over 300,000 plus miles on motorcycles, no damage. My general health is still very good except for some minor sports injuries and too many years in the sun, I have no complaints. (update as of 10-28-17) I will be retired for twenty years and turn 76 in December. health still good with the normal spots of arthritis an a partially torn ACL from trying to play soccer with my grandson. still married, 52yrs now. so far I haven't found anything good about getting old. I was always told that you would gain wisdom, still waiting.
