Terry's Story

School It's pretty tough for a 60 year old guy to write a bio in less than 4,000 characters. Unless you've led a dull life, too many things get missed. So I'll just provide an update on things until, one of these days, I have the time to write a condensed lifetime in 4,000 words. I'm in Iraq right now, doing my part to help this country get back on it's feet. I've been connected with the Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction project since early 2003 (when I took a week off ostensibly to travel to CA for my mother's 90th Birthday). It's probably the most unbelievably broad and unique project that I've been connected with over my 37 year career in larger project engineering and construction. We've touched more lives (for the good) than any previous reconstruction project and done so throughout the country, with Iraqi engineers and supervisors and Iraqi subcontractors which is another story in itself. I'll be departing Baghdad and the project this week heading back to the UK which I call home right now. There's another project there awaiting me and, more importantly, my family. Due to the situation here I was forced to leave behind when I signed on to run this thing. While I can't wait to get home, I hate to leave here recognizing that so much remains to be done. But I'll leave that to the new team that's recently arrived - they can put their all into it as I have done these past 20 months and leave here feeling as I do now. We did a very good thing for the people of Iraq and now we're doing more. That's all for now.... So now it's almost a year later and I'm still in London, now working to make the metro system faster, more comforatble and safer. Big job, but someone has to do it.. And now three years later and I'm in Angola Africa working to build an LNG plant to ship LNG to the gulf Coast of the US. The plant site is right on the Congo River and almost at the exact location where the Portuguese discoveres and later colonialists landed in 1481. Not so nice is the fact that the Portuguese and others were then instrumental in shipping out over 4 million Angolans to serve as slaves in the western (and some eastern) worlds. My wife Elaine continues to reside in London where we have a flat. I'll be with her every 8 weeks as we move through the year since this project is a camp job with no family status capability. Daughter Couirtney is attending Lehigh University studying Astro-Physics (takes after her Dad) and kids Teri and John both reside in Houston. Teri also works for Bechtel and will soon be married to another John (John Neumann) while son John teaches and has his own multi-media company. We're all healthy and mostly happy (living w...Expand for more
ith Elaine would make me totally happy) and looking forward to a long retirement. Another year has gone by and I'm still here in Angola (soon to be out I hope). Daughter Teri is now married and doing well in Houston. Son John and fiance Meagan will marry in October and I'm going to be a real grandfather in November! Wow! What a year. Daughter Courtney completed her senior year at Lehigh and is now prepping for her "super-senior" year. We're behnd her all the way but hoping she finishes next year with a degree she wants and a career path that's meaningful. And another year bites the dust. We're now in 2011 and I'm in Papua New Guinea on a completely different project. What an education - the culture is so different than African and Middle eastern where i've spent much of my overseas time. It goes back 8,000 years and i think some in the Highlands still behave as if it's the year 500BC! It's only been two generations since the days of cannibalism but there are stil warring clans that regularly have a set-to. The Hela Province WIgmen are something else again. Google PNG if you're interested - it's fascinating! I'll soon be departing PNG planning to spend time with Elaine, then closing our flat in London and heading back to the states. WHile not firm as yet, I'll hopefully be in california in time to see old friends at the picnic at Temescal. Meantime, y'all take care It's December 2011 now and Elaine and i are in Houston, just having relocated from our summer house in Michigan. I plan to be here and to continue working for Bechtel during 2012 but retiring for sure at end of next year if not sooner. Consequently we only rented a house and decided not to buy. What we didn't anticipate was the cost of moving into a house in the US. From all of our overseas experience, which was paid and arranged by the company, to learning how expensive it was to do it ourselves has been a staggering, throat grabbing learning experience.. But i have to say it's great being here actually - avoiding the raw winters of Michigan at the same time being near John and Teri and their families that now include 3 granchildren - 1yr, 5mos and and an 8yr old is the prize! Daughter Courtney worked all summer and into this month as an Intern with Bechtel in Frederick, MD. Her boyfriend, an electrical engineer, works there as well. Both of them will join all of the rest of us in Houston for Christmas - the first time we've all been together at Christmas for many, many years. Courtney finishes her AstroPhysics degree in May 2012 and will likely work for Bechtel in Frederick (for a while at least) after that. That's all for now. Merry Christmas to everyone Terry
