Terry's Story
OK then. For those who remember me I was a bit of a loner in school. School in Coos Bay didn't seem to be getting me where I wanted to be. In late Feb 1967 I said good bye and went to Fort Lewis Wash to be issued my Army green suits. From there I trained in Air Traffic Control in Mississippi. After training I came home in October and married Marilyn Robinson before shipping off to Germany. Jo (Marilyn)and I had two children, John and Deana. After returning from Germany we lived in Coos Bay for a few months to find that there wasn't much of a career opportunity there so in May of 1971 we moved to Portland where I worked for the Caterpillar dealer there. In March of 1975 I was lured to Alaska by the Trans Alaska Pipeline and ended up working for the Cat dealer in Fairbanks. In 1976 Marilyn and I said goodbye and I moved the kids to Fairbanks with me where in mid 1977 I married Karen Coppenger, another high school sweetheart. Karen had two children, Kevin and Kami and on November Daniel was born. In late 1979 we moved to a new opportunity with the same Cat dealer in Juneau where we lived until late 1986. ed to the Cat dealer in Portland, working out of their Longview Wash. branch. It turned out I hated Longview. It ruined our marriage. I started working back at the Portland main office and in late 1989 I left Karen. I lived with my current wife Fran from Aug 1989 until we finally tied the knot in June 1999. Today we live in a quiet neighborhood in Milwaukie, about 15 miles South of Portland. In December 2008, after 25 years of continuous employment with The Cat dealer I was laid off. Seems for good. Portland Community College picked up the scraps and offered me a position with their "Think Big " program where we teach a 2 year associates degree for Caterpillar technicians. I commute 22 miles each way to have this fun. I enjoy working with the students and sharing some of my knowledge and experience. And also the opportunity learn and work with my hands. Retirement? I plan to start exploring my options but anticipate working until I reach 66 years and can enhance my retirement savings with a little bigger Social Security check.
