Terry's Story

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Yesterday, I was a lost boy walking the halls of Bryant Jr. High and Northwestern. Today, I am a found man. I took my time growing up, I wanted to have fun and enjoy life, then it hit me. As a man, I still can have fun and enjoy life! So that's what I do, I have fun and I truly enjoy life and I have memories that I constantly refer back to. Like being one of the last to be allowed to get up close to and take a picture of the Mona Lisa at the Louve in Paris. Or Meeting the President of Portugal and being surprised to find out that he already knew my name and had been told that I was someone that he should speak to. Or visiting a Temple way back in the jungle of South Korea and being the first black person that they had ever seen. Can you imagine how that felt? To know that I would set the standard for all future blacks that they would see from then on? Now I am a single parent, a black man raising his own children. It is without a doubt the most important job that I have ever had. I strive daily to be the dad that God wants me to be. My sons will never wonder if they are loved by me, they always receive encouragement, chastisement and hugs and kisses. I don't worry about their salvation because they both came to me to help lead them to Jesus Christ and after they were saved, we were all baptised together. What a blessing! This is a poem that I wrote, it's called "Dad" Dad God, I'm happy when I'm called dad, my chest swells with pride. And all the love that I possess starts dancing deep inside. When I was young unlike most boys it wasn't toys that made me glad I'd always smile when I would dream Of a child that called me dad. Yes we hear about so many men and how they are so deadbeat, but there are many men like me That find having children such a treat. Sometimes work can be terrible, and mash us down beneath the floor but our children are there to pick us up, when we walk into the door. I know my children look up to me, whether or not I want them to I'm proud that I am their role model Showing them things they should do. There are times when I may seem low key or wear a tightly buttoned shirt, but just watch how quickly I come alive when one of the children gets hurt. They say that mom shows all the affection, well maybe that's how it used to be just sit back and watch how tender I am when holding my children close to me. There is nothing I find more special and erases all the doubt and gloom, then when I hear, "That's my dad!" Shouted in a crowd filled room. I love Christmas time of the year and birthdays and paydays too, because then I buy gifts for my children; that's what I really love to do. I admit it, yes they are spoiled, spoiled right down to the core and if I had more money, God knows that I'd spoil them more. You better believe that I'm not ashamed to be seen holding onto their hand, I'm not even worried about what you think because I know that I'm a manly man. You can call me what you want and it won't even make me mad; because Heaven smiles down on me, when my children call me dad. Terry L. Williams I know that there are many other men that feel the same way that I do about their children, they just don't have the gift of poetry that I've been blessed with. Well Share this with your children. Be blessed. I've come a long way since leaving Flint Michigan, and though I live in VA now, I will always be a Flintstone. I am a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. (Blu Phi!) I have been blessed to teach in prisions and jails, and be a big brother through big brothers/big sisters of America. I encourage everyone that reads my bio to do the same. If you think that you have it bad, go meet a person that can't even spell their own name. You might think that you have nothing to offer, but you would be wrong. Just spending time and talking about things going on in the "Free World" helps a lot. The bible teaches us, "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much requ...Expand for more
ired." I have been blessed with much, so gladly I give. I have not met one person that I would not like to meet again; everyone that I have known has made me a better man and I thank you, for you pushed me, challenged me and sometimes disrespected me, but God told me that all things work together for the good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. I wouldn't change ANYTHING about my journey, for the road that I have travelled has brought me to where I am now and you all were a part of it. Thank you and I wish you a peaceful journey. My love for God has made my life richer. In July 07, I received my calling and now I preach God's word. I am Now the Pastor of a tiny church of 21, but we worship and serve as if there are 10 thousand of us. We take and move it forward. from the church house to the church streets, the highways and byways, wherever God sends me that's where I will go. As Matthew 28:19-20 says, "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." God has given me more than I am worthy of, thank God for the blood! My youngest son, has also been called to the Ministry and is now in training, what a blessing! I don't know where the road will lead me, but I know that I will go; because I will never be anywhere that is outside God's will for me. With my mouth I will praise him, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made! For those of you that haven't given your life to the Lord, please read Roman's 10-9 and become born again. From Jefferson, to Bryant, to Northwestern, to Saginaw Valley, to the Air Force, to the New School University and Northcentral University. I say Much Love. Shout outs to Lackland, Sembach, Keesler, Taegu, Griffiss, Louisville, Seattle and Fort Meade. The Air Force took in a lost boy and delivered a found man. I was blessed to retire in July 04 after twenty three years of service. I've lived in Europe and Southeast Asia among other places. I played football in Germany for four years back in the early eighties. I graduated from college in Manhattan, New York and Arizona. Now I live in Ashburn, Virginia, which is a long way from Flint, both in miles and life. I'm a published poet and playwright, I've had two plays produced, one ran back in Flint called "A man can't do nothing for me" I wrote it for my sister who acts. I am constantly writing and I would love to see one of my stories on the big screen and when that happens, please believe that Flint will be all through it. I have no complaints, God has been very good to me and I thank him every day. Should we be blessed to meet once again, then family, please give a shout. Family, I came across a poem that is full of power. The author is named Mariane Williamson. The name of it is "Our Deepest Fear." Parts of it has been used in a few movies, but this is the complete version. Please read it and know that God has a plan for you. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Our Deepest Fear Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. We all need encouragement, so be encouraged, and smile because God loves you!
