Terryll's Story
I had planned to attend college after graduation to study law and psychology, then to join the FBI. I had been accepted at 5 colleges/universities, all several states away from N.C. I was tied for the one scholarship available that year, with a boy, and Pop Joyner called me to his office and told me that college was more important for boys than girls, so he decided to give the scholarship to the boy - no drawing straws, challenge tests, anything - just the boy gets it. So, since my parents didn't have enough money for travel & living expenses until I could get a job, and to pay tuition, etc., I lost my chance at college. I still studied those subjects, though, and I'm sure I could have passed the bar, etc., but that wasn't possible without the college degree. So I got married instead. We owned and operated 3 restaurants, plus his roofing company throughout our marriage. We had 1 child, a daughter, then after 16 years we divorced. He kept the roofing company, plus he was a talented musician and had a rock band, and I kept the restaurant. After a few years, I had a good offer to sell out, which I did, then went to work for the L'eggs Div. of Hanes Hosiery as one of the original "L'eggs Ladies". I drove a big truck around to grocery, drug, and dept. ...Expand for more
stores and talked them into placing the pantyhose displays in their stores. After 15 years, Hanes (which had become Sara Lee) shut down that division, so I took the generous severance package and took some time off to decide what I wanted to do. I had enjoyed driving the trucks so much that I continued to do that, until I became disabled. I was on disability when I reached early retirement age, so I was drawing enough to live comfortably. I had been single the whole time, but then my best friend of 10 years and I decided to quit looking for "someone like you" and we got married. We had a great deal in common and it was a good life until his passing in 2010. I don't plan to ever marry again - I enjoy being alone, with my 2 cats in my place in the country in Stokes Co., NC. I make custom design jewelry and continue to study different subjects, plus I am an herbalist and prepare herbal remedies for people who can't afford medication or don't have insurance. My daughter had 2 children, a boy & a girl, and they each have 1 son, so that's 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Oh, and one thing I kept hidden during my school years and some time after...I am not Christian - I am Pagan...following the old ways of this ancient spiritual belief system.
