Theresa's Story
The short version?
Left Las Cruces sophomore year. Moved to West Germany. Loved it. Met great people there. Travelled a bit - though it seems like a million years ago now. Graduated from Frankfurt American High School. Loved it, except for the very long bus ride from Aschaffenburg. Went to Mount Holyoke College. Loved it - except for the fact that it was all female - though I am still very loyal to it. It has a beautiful campus! Majored in Art History and English. Loved New England. All that green - so different from New Mexico. Met Tom - now husband (who went to Amherst).
Both moved to New York City so I could attend Columbia University for a master's program in art history. What a terrific place! (New York - not Columbia.) We've been here ever since. Have two kids - raised them here in the city - they are normal kids, not the scarey types you see on TV. Josie will graduate from Amherst College in May 2009, Andy is graduating from Stuyvesant High School (where Josie also went) ...Expand for more
in June 2009. College plans for him are not firm yet. We live in the West Village, a block or so off the Hudson River, in a loft apartment - have a dog and cat and life is pretty normal except sometimes I wonder what a kid from Las Cruces is doing here! We go back to NM periodically since I want my kids to know how cool that part of the country is (and since we get serious chile cravings otherwise). Good to see lots of sky too.
I work as a real estate appraiser, oddly enough with a specialty in valuing land (here in Manhattan). A lot of my work is litigation oriented, so I have, luckily, been pretty busy. It is a fascinating city and it is never dull. I love this city, but, if you got the impression that I have loved all the places I have lived you would be right. At this point I cannot imagine living anywhere else. We've had ups and downs (we are roughly 1 mile north of "ground zero" - so had a front row seat for that terrible time), but this is now home. It has been an amazing journey.
