Theresa's Story

Hi All! I just looked through the 1970 yearbook! Wow! What beautiful faces! To be that young again! Who knew what we were really capable of doing at that tender age....Well, a lot has happened since then. Like many of you, I went to DVC to start out with. A couple of years later I went on to Berkeley and majored in Chemistry of all things. Never loved it, but it was amazing training for the brain and for life - I did a few things with it - some lab work, some technical and textbook writing and many, many enlightening moments of teaching and tutoring throughout the years, I got married in 1977 and moved to Cambridge where my husband, Jere went to MIT in Chemistry. I worked at various companies back East as a technical writer until we had our first child, Hans, in Boston. Took one look at our precious son and halted my tech writing career to be a full-time mom. In 1983 we moved back to California where our family and our hearts were and had our daughter, Anna. During that time I continued tutoring math and chemistry and ran a learning center for a few years while herding and corralling our two kids with their activities.Things were fairly normal until our kids finished college and launched off on their adventures. Our son went into the Peace Corps in the dessert country of Turkmenistan and our daughter went on a premed internship in the Amazon jungle of Ecuador. That's when the real adventures began! I got involved with helping an indigenous Shuar community (the head-shrinkers of the amazon) build a school in the jungle, and from there I decided we needed a way to give our supporters a way to claim a tax break so I founded a non-profit corporation called SUS...Expand for more
TAIN, Inc. Its mission is in its name: "Setting Up Support To Aid Indigenous Needs." SUSTAIN and our supporters have recently helped a couple of communities both in the US and in Mexico, to improve their abilities to educate their youth within their villages with the intent of preserving their precious languages and cultures, while still learning from a modern curriculum. Our newest project in the works is to help a Nahuatl community in the mountains of Veracruz, Mexico set up a medical program to aid the remotest people's needs - wish us luck! While our home is in Livermore, Jere and I spend most of our time in SoCal where he works in the pharma industry. Meanwhile, I've found amazing volunteer work teaching English as a Second Language to day laborers at a labor exchange in Malibu, helping to organize internships there for local Pepperdine students, writing and reading my poetry/stories of my wild experiences in the jungle and the labor exchange at a local venue in Malibu. I love to learn too - my latest schooling has been to earn my TESL and Adult Ed certificates at UC Berkeley....and with it all, I still wonder what I want to be when I grow up. I will say, our greatest joy and challenge in this life has been raising our two kids. They have brought the world into our lives by their and our travels and adventures all over the world - and we hope to keep going! Hans is a writer and teacher in Prague, and Anna is a doctor in Palm Desert. Jere is working on a timely treatment for the double chin! Any takers? And I plan to write and teach and travel until I drop, just like my kids... "it's better to burn out than to fade away." Thank you Neil Young...
