Chris's Story

Life Any of you that will remember me at all will probably remember me as "Chris" rather than Thomas. I was in the band, played flute. Also in the choir, sang bass and baritone and did some solo work. Also acted in the school plays. After graduating from Lutcher Stark in 1958, I attended George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, California for one semester but a death in the family interrupted my college pursuits. I was required to return to Batesville, Arkansas, the place of my birth, where I restarted college at Arkansas College. I graduated in 1963 with a BA in Liberal Arts, Major in Voice, with minors in Speech and Drama and Education. I married Judy Matlock, of Batesville, my senior year. I taught school for 5 years. My marriage and my teaching career came to a screeching halt in 1968. Judy and I had 2 daughters, Christi and Chandra. She was awarded custody and I went to St Louis and started a "career" working with CT Corporation System. While there I ran into an ex-student, Marilyn Pearman, for whom I, and every other male in town, had lusted during the last year of teaching in Malden, Missouri. The feelings I found had been mutual. After a whirlwind courtship we married. Marilyn and I had 1 son, Josh. After 5 years we split and ultimately divorced. I then decided I had held back long enough so I resigned from my job with CT and began acting and singing for a living. It was what I had wanted to do all my life but I had just been too hesitant. For several years I performed in St Louis and Kansas City at the MUNY and the Starlight Theatres and I also sang in numerous hotels and supper clubs in the area. Great times for a bachelor. In 1977 I moved to Beaumont, Texas....Expand for more
Again, it was a family need that caused me to leave St. Louis. I continued to act and sing in Beaumont for almost 2 years. In 1979, I left Beaumont and moved to Houston where I was a principal singer at The Great Caruso until 1984 when the entertainment business, so attached to the oil business, bottomed out. I had remarried in 1980. My wife, Lynne Corley, was a banker. I had an opportunity to delve in the oil business for 2 years myself and was instrumental in the drilling of 2 producing wells of which I held a 3% and 2% overiding royalty interest. Unfortunately, they were short life wells and soon were relegated to stripper well status. In 1987, I went to work for the Department of Veterans Affairs with whom I am still employed. My current position is Congressional Liaison. Lynne and I divorced in 1995. We had no children. On October 11, 2002, I married Sharon Parnell. We live in Houston. We have no children at home. We do have a minature dacshund named Penelope Bettina ("Pennie" familiarly). I still sing occasionaly but not so often. I would love to hear from any of my classmates and if we ever have a reuniuon I would love to attend. My address is: ***** Briar Forest Dr. Houston, TX 77042-2405 "Chris" Barrett UPDATE: 03/10/2009 I retired from the VA last October and have since attended my 50th HS reunion and 45th college reunion. Sharon and I are very active in our church, St Martin's Episcopal Church, in Houston. And, for the first time after having composed various songs and music all throughout my life, I have just finished my first spiritual song. I am very excited about having accomplished such a change in direction, and I intend to continue in this new path.
