Thomas's Story
After moving from QV at the start of 10th grade, I graduated from Smithtown High and then SUNY Oswego with a degree in education. I started teaching in Liverpool, NY in 1980. I am 1 of 7 Earth Science teachers at the Ninth Grade Annex. When I teach the rocks and minerals unit, I always tell my students about the 5&10 (Woolworth's) garnet ring I bought for Donna Abenda in fifth grade. My students also love the stories about Jimmy Hanlon standing on the window ledge and getting wacked by Sister Agnella (?) with a pointer. And then there was the time Kevin Glanz and I were goofing around while in line for the confessional and Sister Mary Henry came charging over and smacked his face a few times. ...Expand for more
I don't know why she didn't hit me but I said some extra Hail Mary's that day! How about the time in 4th grade when Sister Nicholas pounded Phillip Nelson's head a few times against the door. And yet I have fond memories of the place. I want to thank all those nuns for teaching me self control. There is a real shortage of that in schools lately. Mrs. Garbus, you were the best. Thanks for being a wonderful teacher (grades 2, 5 and 8th English) without ever being violent.
I did not get married until 1999. My terrific daughter is now in second grade and loving it. I hope to retire in a few years and move away from snow (we avg. 119in/yr).
I hope all my OLL "brothers and sisters" are doing well.
