Thomas's Story

I was born in Newfoundland when my Air Force father was stationed up there. I am happily divorced. My schools include Rice University and the UNC School of Public Health. No thoughts of ever totally retiring. I am working as a toxicology consultant at Dydek Toxicology Consulting. I am still playing soccer (or will when the pandemic is over). I enjoy rock and roll, blues, and Great American Songbook music; Film Noir, Screwball Comedies, and French New Wave movies; and classic literature (Dickens, Hemingway, Hawthorne, Steinbeck whom I used to read a lot, but have been very lax about it lately). I am in the process of learning Spanish, but I have been lazy about that as well. If I could safely leave ...Expand for more
the house, I would go play soccer and listen to live music in the Live Music Capital of the World. As to my "quotable quote", do you remember what one of the DJs on KONO or KTSA used to say when he signed off each night? "As you go through life, make this your goal: watch the doughnut and not the hole." I strive to enjoy what I have and not to obsess over what I don't (but that is a challenging hobby...). I have heard it said that one way to beat the COVID blues is to communicate with old (I mean "long-term") friends, so I hope that you will drop me a line sometime. We are not supposed to include E-mail addresses or Websites, but you can Google me up on the Interweb to find mine. Cheers, Tom D.

A Modest (Tax) Proposal

I have been thinking about how to make income taxes far less complicated and more equitable. Here is my proposal:

1. Below the poverty level for the year, no tax. Right now, that is an income of

The December 14, 2020 cover of Time Magazine makes the bold claim that 2020 was “the worst year ever”. Clearly, it was a bad year, but was it the worst? Of course, being me that set me to thinking about other contenders.
