Thomas's Story

After completing college at UConn I went to optometry school in Boston, completing my clinical training and then a Ph.D. in Anatomy/Pathology at Boston University School of Medicine. I then completed a year of Fellowship training in Diagnostic Ophthalmic Pathology. I was offered a position at Boston University School of Medicine where I served for 25 years, concluding my tenure there as Professor of Ophthalmology, Pathology and Anatomy and Vice-Chair for Research in Ophthalmology. I maintained a part-time hospital-based practice, while running a federally funded eye research program studying uveitis and glaucoma. I also Directed the Eye Pathology Service for two Boston area hospitals. My teaching and research have brought me all over the world, with my optometrist wife, Dr. Janice Riley from New Bedford, Mass. In 2006, I was offered the opportunity to lead the only anglophone school of optometry in Canada, at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. In that same year I was elected to serve as the President of the International Society for Eye Research. I have been honored to receive numerous teaching awards, awards for my research and two honorary doctorates - one from the State University of New York and the other from the University of Montreal. Jan and I have had two wonderful children. Tragically in 2009, our son M...Expand for more
att, who had completed a Master's degree in engineering at the University of Michigan and had embarked upon a promising career with John Deere, Corp was diagnosed with cancer that was simply unstoppable. We lost him in January 2010. Our daughter Catie, of whom we are equally proud, received her Master's degree, Summa Cum Laude from the Language School at Middlebury College and is now completing a PhD in the Department of Romance Languages at Johns Hopkins University where she was recently named a Dean's Fellow.. She married her anesthesiologist beau almost two years ago and they are happy. Jan has retired and I am teaching part time at the School of Optometry in Worcester, MA. After leaving Canada we have moved back to the US and are living in what was our second home on the water in Westport, MA. A year ago completed a new medical textbook on anatomy of the eye and was recently named a Senior Fulbright Fellow by the US Dept of State. This has allowed me to travel to South Africa during the past two years, to assist them in revising their model of eyecare delivery to better suit the overwhelming need for routine and medical eyecare. I lost my Dad and my brother Steve a couple of years ago, only a month apart. For now, I am trying to fulfill my 92 year old Mom's desire to remain in the house where I grew up in Bolton.
