Thomas's schools include La Salle High School. Thomas lived in Port Hueneme, as well as other parts of California, for the last 40 years, but returned to his old Lindbergh Avenue address to care for his 94 year old father in 2018. Ernie died in April of 2020, just short of his 96th birthday, so Thomas has moved back to his adopted California homeland, this time to San Diego to be near his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. As he said to his opthalmologist when told he had a cataract "No, I am still driving the Lincoln!"
