Thomas's Story
I have lived in New York since 1983 and have been working in health care (psychiatric social work) since 1985 -- and at the same hospital since 1990.
I married my second wife in 1992 and we have two great kids: my son Nathaniel is 15 and my daughter Nadja (which means Hope in Russian) will be 8 in January. My wife is a Queens girl, a native New Yorker, forget about it.
The profile photo shows me with my kids. My wife took it and it is current, although Nat got a significant haircut since that shot was taken (we were on our way to the Memorial Day parade at the time of the photo). Our part of New York is not so different from Toledo, just a little more crowded, but we still have some green spaces...and we are struggling to keep them green.
My family and I lived through 9-11 -- and Mr. Bush's wars. We raised money to help a friend who was very badly wounded in Iraq. He got lousy treatment at the VA and I'm happy to say: good treatment at my hospital. My family spent a lot of time in the streets working to b...Expand for more
ring our people home from the wars. We're still working on that one.
We love NY.
We have it all here: corruption, pollution, congestion, high rents / mortgages, protests, political scandals, all kinds of people -- all of the stuff that makes for great drama. And my second job is to photograph the drama -- I recently got a Congressional certificate for community service (from Rep. Mike McMahon) for my work as a photojournalist who covers labor (I'm proud to be UAW), the peace movement and civil rights. I am humbled to have it - and it is not without irony as I worked on another candidate's campaign (progressive Steve Harrison) in the election where Mike got elected.
I do love NY -- but I think about my home town occasionally.
I was saddened to see that the Toledo Sports Arena was torn down (and Bowsher too). I saw many a show there and even remember a few of them -- rather fondly -- much as I regard my home town. I sincerely hope that my old classmates are surviving the recession and enjoying good health.
