Thomas's Story
Born in Marion, OH. Family moved to Caledonia in 1960, where I started the fourth grade at Caledonia Elementary. Then Junior High at Clarendon, and finally at River Valley. During my senior year in high school, spent my afternoons working at the Southland Mall Sears Display department. This was due to me being in Deca classes at River Valley. Must have put the bug in me for art and displays in my future at that time and didn’t know it. After graduating in 1971, received a draft number (#61) from the selective service. Didn't like my odds, so I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in December. Went to basic training on Groundhog's Day, 1972. Became a Graphics Illustrator in the Audiovisual field, and spent the next 20+ years in the Air Force. Spent my last five years with the Air Force Orientation Group, the the official exhibit branch of the Air Force. Retired in June of 1992 as a Master Sergeant (E7). Have been stationed in Ohio, South Korea, South Dakota, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Republic of Turkey, Virginia, and back to Ohio in that order. Really miss Hawaii...could have stayed there the rest of my life! Made many close friends there who were locals. Ran two Honolulu Marathons, and was 1980 Hawaii State Champion in Novice Dance (roller skating). Hanging out and skating at t...Expand for more
he Hy-Way Rollerena in Marion must have paid off later on! I met my second (and final) wife in Hawaii. She is originally from South Korea, and the best thing that has happened to me. Now married for 42+ years. We have two sons, now 37 and 36. After military retirement, I spent 11 years as a government contractor at Wright-Patterson AFB supporting the Air Force Research Lab's Exhibits and Displays' Division. Then worked almost 6 years with a privately-owned display house in the Dayton area. Traveled extensively around the U.S. supporting clients at trade shows, conventions, and career fairs. Now retired. Time to do something different, and try to slow down a bit. Don't get a chance much to get up to Marion or Caledonia (only 100 miles away) much anymore. Maybe three times a year. Really miss my friends who are not with us any more (Arden Kline, Jim Callahan, etc.). Lost my younger brother Dan unexpectedly in September of 2022. Miss him a lot. Would love to see and speak with others who graduated in ‘71. I’m grateful for the things and friends I have, yet regret for the things I could have done. Favorite music is the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Van Halen. Favorite shows are All Creatures Great and Small, Will Trent, Resident Alien, Fire Country, World on Fire.
