I haven't found the 'truth' yet...but I am getting gosh darned close, I will tell you that! Respect!!!"...me "God is too big to fit inside one religion"--- unknown "Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none."---Thomas Jefferson "It is regrettable that many personal fortunes are made by people who simply manipulate money and contribute nothing to their society"---Unknown "The people should not be afraid of the government. The government should be afraid of the people." ---Guy Fawkes". More about Thomas:"I was introduced to Libertarian thought nearly twenty years ago when I lived in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. I always have been a person who has questioned authority, even as a child. I went to an 'old style' Catholic school, and for those who are familiar with this type of education, you a regimented in nearly every way possible. I was one of the smartest students with the worst behavior problems. When I got to college (1968) I was exposed to vast array of ideas at an experimental school, Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida. I changed overnight from a rather shy and introverted person, to a social and political activist. This was the year when the antiwar and other movements reached their peak. I became a leftist/socialist, which was i...Expand for more
n vogue at the time. I was waiting for a 'revolution' which never came. As an adult, I was never in the 'mainstream'. When most of the people my age were pursuing careers and raising a family, I went from job to job, school to school, career to career, relationship to relationship, never really 'settling down'. I voted for Democrats, and an occasional third party candidate in presidential races (Ross Perot, John Anderson). I felt like it was my ‘duty’ to not support Republicans, a carryover from my ‘radical’ days. I felt like there was something wrong with the direction the country was going, but I couldn’t find the right ‘fit’ among the major parties. It seemed like the country was moving in a direction where my personal freedom was being eroded. I maintained some contacts with antiwar and environmental groups, but my efforts seemed wasted. People of my generation didn’t seem to care about my issues anymore. I became concerned about being ‘politically incorrect’, trying to maintain an image with my peers, who remained politically active. It never occurred to me that I was not the problem. Ronald Reagan spoke of the government being the problem. When his administration ran budget deficits, enacted policies which persecuted drug users and our privacy rights, I began to think that the ‘struggle’ was over. I became apathetic and immersed myself in ‘New Age’ groups. I met someone who liked to dress up as Uncle Sam and protest the income tax. He invited me to monthly gatherings at his home, where, in addition to a party atmosphere, he spoke about the Libertarian Party. Over time, I began to read and study, and found that I liked what he and others had to say. I eventually joined the party, and supported some of the candidates, such as Harry Browne, and others. I was in Florida during the 2000 presidential election, which I thought was ‘stolen’ (still do), and pretty much gave up on electoral politics I was an early supporter of Ron Paul in 2008, but I switched to Obama, as I thought he really meant he would bring about change. The bailouts started, the wars continued, and deficits ballooned. I am now back to where I started: nothing is going to change unless we reform the whole system.".
