Thomas's Story

It's been close to 60 years since high school. Hard to believe, WOW! I have signed up for the minimum subscription to Classmates and have read the stories many of you have added to your profiles. My subscription is about to end and I'm sure thousands of you, if not all, are wondering what has happened to me? LOL.... I joined the Navy after wasting my high school years by behaving badly and not taking school very seriously, (I'm sure Pete G. remembers us being high school kids hitch-hiking across the country), and I left my Teaneck friends and my high school love (really?), Carole R. behind. The war in Vietnam was the big news at the time, and I thought I should go help save the world from the bogie man. My childhood BFF Joe G. and I decided to join the Navy. After a few months of boot camp at the Great Lakes we were sent in different directions by the Navy. When I think back, I believe joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I've made in my life. The Navy took me in as a wise-ass young brat, grabbed me by the shoulders and shook me until I learned what it meant to be an adult. Due to the war, many enlistments were extended involuntarily, so I ended up serving 3 years, 5 months, and 27 days (not that I was counting) rather than the 3 years originally committed. te 1966, moved to NYC and started a job that would lead to a successful career in IT (known as data processing at the time and very primitive compared to the IT world of today). I married a girl from NYC and moved back to NJ. We had a daughter. Several years later we divorced. I then met and married a woman (the real love of my life!) from Glen Rock, started an IT services company, added a son, added a grandson (my daughter's son). I had a couple of heart attacks (the 2nd occurred in March 2013). I retired shortly after the 2nd attack. My wife retired from teaching, but we continue to live in NJ and share our free time between our homes in NJ and Vermont. Regretfully, I don't have many great memories of high school, nor do I remember most of the alumni registered on Classmates or other various reunion sites. I'm not sure if that is related to my age or because most of the alumni are simply not memorable (I include myself in that group). As such I don't participate in the reunions, etc. Most of the folks that I do remember from the high school days haven’t joined the Classmates hoopla. However, it is nice to see the enjoyment many of you get sharing memories. I do remember some of you and of course wish you all well. My Classmates subscription will be ending, but if you would like to share a thought or two, I can be contacted at twking0584 at gmail.com.
