One of Thomas's favorite quotes is:""Two households are expensive! You are going to have to get a job Ms. Laurie Maloney!" Judge Robert N. Dugan 10 December 2012". More about Thomas:"To be honest, I have had a very amazing life and, for the most part, have been very lucky during my lifetime. Let me start by saying I did not have a great childhood or family life. It was not until I turned 17, graduated from high school, and got a job that things started to get better for me. Being young and foolish, I decided to not further my education and worked in the seafood industry. I began as an apprentice fish cutter and quickly mastered the skills to earn the wages of a skilled fish cutter in a factory. I also worked on a scallop boat as a fisherman and saw many wonders at sea. I saw endless thunderstorms every night, sharks swimming alongside the boat, and much more. It was quite fascinating! After a year, I decided a smart young man could do better in life and went to college. Again, I was lucky and got accepted to Boston University on my first application. At the same time, I joined the Army reserve to help earn money. The pay was good and it was very fun. Of course, I must mention that I had a calling at a very young age to serve my country in the Army and it was only a question of time until I did such a thing. While in school, I always received high grades and graduated at the top of my class. I also did very well in the Army Reserve. I went from a Private to Sergeant in no time and received a commission as a Second Lieutenant in less than two years. I did and saw a lot of things in the Army reserve and traveled to many places. I even saw one of the rarest toads in the world, a venomous toad that was quite dangerous. After I graduated from college, I went into the regular Army as an artillery officer. My first assignment was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for training. Fort Sill is the Center for Field Artillery. I graduated from Artillery school as one of the top students in my class. My next stop was to Baumholder, Germany where I spent four years. It was an exciting time and I saw and did many interesting things. While serving as a Fire Direction Officer for an artillery battery, we fielded the first computer artillery command and control system. I fired over 3,000 rounds in a month which was the most rounds fired by any USA artillery battery since the Vietnam War. I also was trained as a helicopter pilot and flew light helicopters as an aerial observer for the artillery assigned to my division. I also was on maneuvers during the time of the greatest snow storm in the last 200 years in Germany. While serving in Grafenwoehr, Germany, I saw the Northern Lights and more stars at night than I can remember. It was very beautiful. After this assignment, I returned to Fort Sill for training as a com...Expand for more
mander and staff officer and graduated with top honors. I was promoted to Captain as the number 7 ranked officer in my year group. I was also selected as the number 2 ranked officer to attend the Command and General Staff Officer Course and graduated as the Honor Graduate. My next assignment was in Augsburg, Germany. I went to a very prestigious unit with a one of a kind mission in the Army. I went through many tests with my unit and passed all with highest marks. When this was over, I was given command of an artillery battery. I was injured during this time. I was in three artillery attacks and injured in one of them. I also was in a knife fight and was wounded. These two events left me with several physical scars. I suffered a spinal injury when trying to rescue some of my soldiers in an accident. I spent nine months in Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC and was then medically retired because of my injuries. I was not expected to walk again but I proved everyone wrong. While in the Army, I earned a Masters of Science degree from the University of Southern California. I spent a year going through rehabilitation and was accepted to Brown University as a PhD student in Computer Science. Unfortunately, I was unable to go as I felt the need to make money and provide a good life for my family. I accepted a job for the Army as an intern Scientist in research, development, and testing of weapons systems. I was an Independent Evaluator and wrote reports for use by Congress to make decisions on how to fund Army equipment. I did this work for 20 years and retired as a Senior Scientist in the Army before I turned 50. During this time, I was lucky to have three wonderful children. As for me, I realized very early in my career that the values one holds help to define a person better than anything else. My values of honor, integrity, loyalty, duty, self-sacrifice, diligence, country, and the other values I hold dear have helped to make me successful and accomplish my life’s goals. I have many interests. I liked to work with young people and coached as a volunteer for American football and baseball until about two years ago. I also love to build and collect guns and have a large collection. I shoot competitively and am a licensed scuba diver. I ski, camp, hunt, fish, play chess and many other games, read, collect antique books and coins. I also collect military history artifacts as well as fine art. I own three motorcycles and an antique Army vehicle. In fact, I have more interests than memory for them all. Now that I am retired, I must confess that I am a bit of a romantic person and dream of spending my remaining days fulfilling my romantic desires. There are places I still hope to see, such as Yosemite Park, Grand Canyon, Great Redwood Trees, Egypt for the ancient monuments, Herculaneum and Pompey in Italy, the Ukraine, and China to name a few. As someone in retirement, I am enjoying my Golden Years! It is important for me to say that my wife of nearly 29 years and seven months has recently decided to end our relationship. I loved her dearly and was a loyal and faithful husband. All I can say about her decision is that my wife is a special woman with needs that are beyond my control.".
