Thomas's Story
Life
I am fortunate and have lived, and continue to live a wonderful life. I worked hard early in my life and learned the value of saving and investing. I joined the US Navy after college and during the Vietnam War when it was not fashionable, liked the assignments and the officer's and men I worked with and decided to make a military career. I traveled the world, met and married a beauty queen who was also a Navy Nurse and had two wonderful children who have grown up into educated responsible adults, and who are well on their way today to success of their own right. With our children now grown, I decided to totally retire to allow my wife and I to spend more time together traveling and enjoying the benefits we have accumulated. More recently I came out of retirement to run for state office, but it was not a good year for Republican's, and certainly not in Montgomery County Maryland.
Workplace
I feel like I have worked most of my life. I started working delivering newspapers for the NY World Telegram and Sun at age 13. I soon started working for a local Newspaper store and put together on Saturday and Sunday all the NYC Sunday newspapers. My work then expanded during the week and before long I was handling all the inventory manageme...Expand for more
nt functions of the store, ordering, receipts, returns, and stock rotation. I worked through college and until I joined the US Navy. I spent a full 20 yr career in the Navy, and retired to Washington DC where I joined a Think Tank as their CFO. Then I left the Think Tank to Join SAIC as a consultant, and then left to help my ailing older brother until his untimely death. I then joined Edward Jones to start a career in the investment community. I was trained well at Edward Jones, but moved on to become an independent broker, and rode the market downturn, and the effects of 911 to bring my client portfolios back to life and along the way, spent a lot of time studying the IBD CANSLIM investment strategy, and decided to give it up to retire and now I only trade my own portfolio. All in all, I have had a very diverse working career in and out of Government, but the most personally challenging and rewarding career was in deed my military career in the US Navy. When I joined it was not fashonable because it was during the Vietnam War, and truly some of our fellow citizens treated us members of the militay with contempt and distain. Thank God that has now all changed. Many ask me if I would do it again? I would do it again in a heartbeat.
