Thomas Musser:

CLASS OF 1965
Coal center, PA

Thomas's Story

After graduating CHS in 1965, I attended California State College until I was drafted in 1969 and have not been back to California, PA ever since. I joined the Navy in January 1969 and served aboard nuclear submarines, operating nuclear power plants. I married a girl from Charleroi in Hawaii in 1972 that only lasted 18 months. I guess the first marriage is for training. I met and married my second and final wife shortly thereafter and we have been married and deeply in love since 1974. We have four children. Children are God's way for you to look forward to death but we love them anyway. I ended up spending almost 24 years in the NAVY and retired in 1992. All my youth and passion was spent chasing Russian submarines all under the Pacific Ocean until the Cold war was over. We lived in Hawaii for ten years before in really became too "touristy". We moved to Utah for three years of recruiting, 76-79 and finally to beautiful San Diego where we have lived since 1983. I was able to finish my Bachelor Degree at Chaminade College in Hawaii in 1982. After I retired from the US Navy in 1992, I worked for a logistics contractor for Military Sealift Command (MSC) from 1992 until 1999. MSC has taken over all the Navy's auxiliary ships, now run by civilians and they deliver the beans, bullets and gas to the warfighters in the combat fleet. I was hired on by MSC in 1999 a...Expand for more
nd I am now the Logistics Director for a MSC repair command in San Diego, CA. Even though my wife and I are "empty nesters" we find we still have to support our children. We have five beautiful grandchildren who I delight in spoiling, much to the chagrin of my own children. The only person from CHS that I ran into in my travels since I left PA was the brother of Keith McMonagle. I met him in a bar called DumS**t Okie's on the honch in Yokosuka, Japan one very alcohol clouded evening. After spending 65 days underwater one tended to indulge all available vices a little too much when in port. I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to most European countries, visited numerous Mediterranean ports, Arabian Gulf ports of Dubai, Baharain, Fujarah and Jebel Ali. I was a frequent traveler for MSC to Singapore from 1999-2006 and can recommend it highly as a wonderful place to visit. All other places in the Western Pacific such as Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines and even Hobart, Tasmania were routine stops during deployments to the Western Pacific. Now I am 61 and the warranty on my body has expired. While recently rearranging junk in my garage, I found my old 1965 CHS yearbook. The memories of high school flooded in and now I am excited to see how my classmates have fared on the road of life. Your Classmate, Bruce Musser
