Thomas's Story

Updated 4/15/2019 Still retired from almost everything, but have started a new publishing company, Calusa Coast Press, Inc. New company will publish my own writings as well as others, beginning with a new magazine, Sarasota Boating. Spend much of my time beach and wilderness walking and in volunteer activities. My passion is boating safety. We just lose too many lives through arrogance, stupidity and ignorance. We moved to Venice, Florida on the Gulf Coast in 2014 to escape the taxes and cold of the North East. People here are very friendly, the taxes are 1/6th of what they were in NJ and there is no state income tax. Should have made the move sooner but I do love the North Country. Favorite sport: Yoga, the hot variety. Unfortunately, my balance is a bit off so I'm doing very little yoga. When I walk, I average 3 to eight miles a day depending on the time available. After 50 years of poor diet and little exercise, I have now completely reversed my Type II diabetes. My weight is within shouting distance of what I weighed in high school. Physical Age....somewhere around 76 depending on when you read this. Emotional age....Sometimes about 12 but I do have my good days especially when it's not a full moon.. Anybody can always contact me via Face Book or Donna Cole. Or, you can just use my name at one or another of the popular email providers. Or have a look at my photos where my contact info is embedded.. Update Nov 6, 2016. All the nice people come down here, which makes Venice and Sarasota County a very nice place to live. hange. There is a something affordable in the way of housing for all income levels. Now, it took us over 2 1/2 years to sell our house in NJ, but we finally did the deed (pun intended)...and yes we took a huge loss. But it was worth it to be free of northern taxes, fuel bills and needing a car to go anywhere. In Venice, the beach is a little over 2 miles away, there is little crime, no income tax. Because of the number of quality thrift stores, we can get almost everything way below wholesale. So if you are wondering whether or not to make the move, come down for a week or two to get the lay of the land. Once you decide, sell off everything you have up north: furniture, appliances, winter clothing. Keep your photos and your beachwear, travel light, and get everything you need here. You will save a ton of money on shipping stuff you're gonna want to sell down here because it doesn't fit the lifestyle or space you have here. If you want new construction, we have a lot of new developments in progress and each one has better amenities than old construction. We bought in a long established neighborhood and do not regret it. That also kept our taxes low and we do not pay housing association fees. We take refugees from as far away as Alaska and Maine, why should Northern New York be any different? Everybody here is from somewhere else, and we all have a lot in common. If you need a good real estate agent down here, we would be happy to provide you with a referral to an excellent agent. Our family has bought and sold through her a few times and everyone has been very happy with her dedication and service.
