Thomas's Story
High school was great. After graduation I followed my girlfriend Janice to Wildwood, NJ where I became a lifeguard on the beach. 1965 lifeguards had big chairs and no shade. My hair turned blonde and my skin got dark brown. Janice made the cover of Philadelphia Magazine for an article they were doing about Wildwood. Inside there was a picture of me on the stand with my cowboy hat on. I had such a good time I went back the following year. There are some things I regret not doing and one of those is following up with the lifeguarding on the beach. Eventually I got a job at the Barefoot Mailman taking care of the Beach and Pool. It was great. I stayed there 4 years. I would have stayed longer except my mother started to call me a beach bum. I didn't mind the name calling but I decided to get a"real job". Whatever that was. njoyed, such as cutting or fabricating glass. Apparently I picked the wrong time to switch jobs because I was only there 6 months when a great recession happened. This was around 1975. I got layed off. It was about that time I got involved with a girl from North Carolina. I had no future plans and was enjoying doing nothing. Eventually we moved to High Point, NC. I figured I had to do something to get involved in the Bi-Centenial. I had bought a 1950 Chevy Pick-up That was owned by a mechanic friend of mine. I was trying to blend in. I was supposed to be working in Aluminum Siding with her brother but things didn't work out and I ended up at a Mirror Factory in Thomasville. Genuine people there. Friendly. Well, one day I'm coming home from work and I get in an accident. Not my fault. But, I'm an outsider and didn't have 10 beer cans fall out of my vehicle when I opened the door. I really liked that truck. All the while this was going on I never thought about using my brain to get a job.
