Thomas's Story

After graduation, I spent the summer of '83 working, and then left on the 8th of September for Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, SC. The week prior, Scott Smith, Luann Stees, and I went to St.Petersburg to see STYX at the Bayfront. Kind of a going away present, if you will. From September to December of '83, my life changed forever. I became a Marine, which is something that once you are, you'll always be. I came home on leave, bought my first brand new vehicle (an '84 Mazda truck), started terrorizing the streets of Bradenton in style, and shortly thereafter, left for NAS Millington, just outside of Memphis, TN. I had only just arrived and checked in when I was informed that my father, Francis Spencer, had succumbed to cancer the night before, and I had to turn around and leave for Minneapolis, MN, somewhere I had never been, to meet a side of my family that I didn't know existed. Shortly after returning from the funeral, I lost my seat for the class I was suppposed to be in, so I was transferred to 29 Palms, CA, for Field Radio Operations school, which became my stock in trade for the next nearly ten years. From 29 Palms to Camp Pendleton, and then on to Okinawa, Japan. I managed to hook up with a couple of classmates who were also on Okinawa, but mostly kept with my platoon mates, and we made the Philipines, Korea, mainland Japan, Mt Fuji, Tokyo, and ever...Expand for more
y place in between. After Okinawa, I went East Coast to New River Air Station, where I was reunited with Dwayne Brown. I met and married my first wife, Kristina, in 1987, in Panama City, FL, where she was born & raised, We have one son, Andrew, who has also served in the Marine Corps. (We divorced in 1997) Following my re-enlistment, I got stationed at MacDill AFB, with JCSE, a subordinate unit of CentCom. We were, as a unit, the lead communications element for Central Command during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I was honorably discharged in 1991. I worked for four years as a operations manager for Raytheon at Patrick AFB, Fl, helping manage the High Frequency Radio shop on Ascension Island. When I left Raytheon, I can back to Panama City, to my wife and son. I got into the car business on the ground floor, as a sales representative, and moved my way up to finance manager, and I have been an inventory manager, internet sales manager, and I am currently the internet manager for Bay Dodge Chryser Jeep in Panama City, Florida. I have been asked many times why I stayed here, when everyone else had left... my reply was simple: The weather agrees with me, I have a great customer base, and I have been in the business for nearly 20 years, in the same town. Staying in one place, doing what I love to do, and making money doing it, I don't feel like I have worked a day in years.
