Thomas's Story
April 2023. Thomasbwelch at gmail. I've spent most of my life in middle of my country, mainly in Minnesota. If you know me from school it was either public schools in the Florida panhandle or college in Missouri. Most of my life has been spent moving up the Mississippi River, from Arkansas to Missouri to Minnesota.
Graduated from Southwest Baptist College in Missouri in 1978. Around 2018 they awarded me an honorary doctorate of business. What about that.
After college I lived in Arkansas. I met my wife and our first two children were born there. I began my investment career in the small town of Pine Bluff (you can't make this stuff up). We moved to Little Rock. I saw Halley's comet. Professionally, I helped develop/implement/maintain investment strategies for corporations. In some form I did this my whole career. Really fun stuff.
1990 to 2003 we lived in St. Louis, Missouri. I get back there 2-3 times a year to see family.
We have three children, all out of college...Expand for more
and deep into their careers and married. Five grandchildren.
2003 to present We live about 20 miles west of Minneapolis, almost in the country. The summers are nice and the winters nicer.
I converted to the Catholic faith in 2016 and volunteer in my parish and various Catholic ministries. I am a hospice volunteer, which is wonderfully rewarding. I also do a bit of water quality reporting for a state agency.
When I travel for pleasure it is most often to Tennessee, the Carolinas and Missouri, where I have family. I retired around 2018.
I play the banjo. I enjoy a good cigar, great books and shun restaurants. I write letters by hand to loved ones and to prisoners at Christmas. I drive an old truck. Most of my days are spent in the presence of people who are better than me. I am unworthy of the blessings heaped on me.
