Thomas Brian's Story
I retired from teaching in the USA on October 17, 2008, after 30 years in the classroom. My last job was in the science department of New Bedford, MA HS. I taught Biology in Blue House. I would like to extend my warmest affection and respect for the faculty, administration, and staff of NBHS.
I decided it was time to do something else. American teenagers can be a tough bunch. Their parents can be just as bad, or even worse. Time for a younger crew of teachers to take over. Best of luck to them.
I got divorced in '04 and started enjoying life again. After a while, you let go of the pain and anger of such an event and you get on with life. If you don't you .... well, just die inside... Anyone who has been through it knows what I am talking about...
I decided to broaden my horizons a bit and combine teaching with traveling. These are my two greatest loves. I answered an ad in an MTA publication and in short order found myself on the other side of the world. I spent the summers of 06, 07, and 08 in Suzhou, China. After I retired I permanently moved to Jiangsu Province in China where I spent nearly the next 8 years.
I took most of a year off in 2015-2016 but decided I was not ready...Expand for more
to completely retire. I took a job at the Singapore International School in Thu Dau Mot, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. My students were a little younger as the school is K-12. I had no experience being around small children so I spent much of my time just being sure they were not underfoot. Seriously though, they were a very sweet bunch of kids.
I was ready to pack it all in again when, much to my surprise, I got an offer from the Karachi American School, in Pakistan. I've only been here a few months so we will see how it goes.
My time in Pakistan came to an end at the end of May. I was on my way to my new job in Malaysia when the Covid-19 virus pandemic pretty much shut most of the world down to travel. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place as flights out of Karachi were few and far between...and frequently canceled. I am extremely grateful to the administration of my school for letting me stay on in the faculty housing until my visa expired. Only then could I fly back to the USA in October!
I'm now living at a B & B 'someplace' in Massachusetts, searching the internet for my next position. I'm hoping for a good one and then perhaps I can consider retiring again. Cheers, everyone!
