Thomas's Story
I dont have a lot of memories at CHS as I was not all that active in school activities. I worked at Publix most of my junior and senior year. My folks moved into the Hillsborough High district but since I had started at CHS I didnt want to change schools. My folks didnt allow rock music or dancing so other than an occasional football game I was not all that active. I was in the chorus and enjoyed that but other than that it was mostly study (and my grades were not all that great) and work. One of the fun memories was of the Opera Aieda at the armory. Gene Stone and I and I think Eugene Lucky were Egyptian soldiers in the opera. It seems as the people I knew have dropped off the earth but we had some good times while we were together.
My folks left a very small town of Galien Michigan in early 1957 against my strong wishes and moved to Tampa ,after all I was a freshman in high school there and that was something. I did graduate from Chamberlain High in Tampa in 1960 and the following Feb joined the Marines. December 11, 1964 I married Patricia Stepehens class of 1964 and had one son Eric and divorced August 1980. Once out of the Marines I worked as USDA fruit and vege Inspector from south FLorida to Long Island each year and loved it. Ive worked vairous jobs and then got recruited to work for Texas International Airlines in Houston. After a Year there, got layed off when TI bought Continental Air, and went to Ford Aerospace and worked in and in support of Mission Control at Johnson Space Center Houston for 12 years in logistics and p...Expand for more
roperty adminstration. After Loral Aerospace lost its NASA contract I returned to Tampa and worked as Inventory Control supervisor for a local manufacturing company and then another layoff so ended up my working days with the FLorida Highway Patrol as a CSO. Dec 2004 Annie and I retired to Lynchburg Virginia and this is as close to heaven as it gets. Ive been married twice, first time for 15 years and now a little over 31 to my current wife. It was sad to see that Galien is a ghost town and the high school has closed but see they closed others in the area too. I do volunteer work with a local Sheriffs Office and do vendor work hanging light fixtures and ceiling fans at Lowes every other week. That keeps me busy in my retirement and gives me a work to earn money and a week to spend it. There are so many day trips from the mountains to the beaches that I cant imagine living anywere else. It seems as everywhere I want to go is less than a days drive from this mountain ridge.
My hero is Col Orson G Swindell III former Marine aviator and POW in North Viet Nam. Was my utilities officer prior to him becoming a aviator (F8 pilot)
Life has been very good and interesting and certainly not boring Think we may take a ride down to Williamsburg for lunch as it is only 160 miles down there. Thank goodness for my FUsion hybrid. IF I need a dose of traffic I can always drive to Richmond on up to Washington. NAH ! had enough of that in Tampa. 4 days in Tampa visiting family is about all we can handle. Tampa was a great place to grow up in back then.
