Thomas's Story
Update as of June 2022
I have lived in Golden, Colorado since 1989 and love it here. My wife and I just celebrated 44 years of marriage. I retired at the end of 2019 after two years of semi-retirement (working half time). The pandemic hit shortly afterward, which impacted our retirement travel plans. We actually traveled quite a bit during 2020 and 2021, but most of it was to care for my aging parents and to attend weddings and funerals. We are finally traveling for pleasure this year, including a river cruise in Europe.
After graduating from Bowsher, I went to the University of Utah. I competed in cross country and track the first two years there, but haven't run competitively since then. While there, I got to be a pretty good skier, completed my mechanical engineering degree, and met my wife, Debbie. We were married two days after graduation. I took a job at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory doing nuclear reactor safety research. Over the next couple of years, we enjoyed skiing, camping, hiking, white-water rafting, and backpacking among that region's spectacular scenery.
In 1981, we moved to Debbie's hometown of Sacramento, CA, where I worked at the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant. We had our first three kids there, and life changed to the family/homeowner mode. When the plant closed in 1989, we moved to our current home in Golden, CO.
As the kids were growing up, I was active in boy scouts, and still enjoy camping, hiking, and skiing. I don't run much any more, as all that pounding takes a toll on my aging ankle joints. I keep in shape by riding my bike.

5, I went back to school for a masters degree in electrical and computer engineering, and began working for a small firm called Process Analysts, Inc., doing control systems and database applications. A few years later, we were bought by Honeywell, and then in 2012, Honeywell abruptly shut down the business unit and I was layed off again. Wunderlich-Malec Engineering acquired the business unit, and I finished my career doing essentially the same job with a smaller company, which I liked much better than a Fortune 50 company.
My oldest son, Chris, is a mechanical engineer, and lives near Boulder, CO with his wife and two young daughters. He is planning to move to Florida this summer, so we are going to have to start traveling to see our granddaughters on a regular basis. My second son, Nick, lives in Portland, OR, where he works at the airport, supplemented by freelance graphic design, which is his passion. My third son, Alex, is a chemist and lives nearby with his wife, their two young sons, and her teenage son They are expecting a fourth child later this year, and this one is a girl. My youngest son, Eric, is also an engineer. He and his wife live in Portland, where he works for Nike as a product developer.
My mother passed away in 2021 and my dad moved into assisted living in south Florida, where they had lived since 1994. My brother and youngest sister also live in Colorado. Jeff's son, Scott, inherited the running gene and has pursued it with a passion. He is among the top marathon runners in the country, most recently finishing 7th in the Boston marathon and was the first American finisher.
