Tom's Story

Man, all I've got to say is those people who remember me with those adjectives must be beginning dementia!! I spent the years post-high working at WAMM, WMRP, WGMZ, WKHM in Jackson. Was in the Navy as a Sonar Tech for 4 years. Got out, came home and 2 weeks later was on my way to college in Phoenix, AZ. One of my classes was at the "College for Consumptive Arts"!! BTW, I graduated "Cum Laude"! While attending school worked for KXIV, a station owned by Dick VanDyke, who at that point lived in Phoenix. Returned to MI in 72, worked at WJRT-TV until WKNR in Dearborn called be to do afternoon drive, Oh Yes, I keep trying to forget, but was married for 4 years to Geraldine Brotherton, with one son Christopher, born in Ann Arbor, Jan 72. WKNR became WNIC, 2 years after, the whole staff was let go, so I returned to Phoenix and KOY as production director. There for a little over a year, Year of constant b______ing from my wife. So back to her Mommy in Flint. I went to WKMF/WGMZ and did a whole bunch of work for Peter C. Cavanaugh at WTAC (best station and program director I ever worked for). 1977 I got a job offer from a Bay City Native, Lowell Homburger, to come to work for the station his Mommy bought him in Phoenix. I was divorced, back in Phoenix - no money BUT a tapper in the living room. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!! Worked a KQXE/K104 for about three years met my wife to be in August of 77. We married in Nov 79. There was a little bit of family tension on both sides as I met this sweet little Mormon girl when she was 16 (she'd skip church with one of her girlfriends to visit me Sunday Mornings). When we married she was 19 and I was 33. We've been HAPPILY together for 34 years. Have one 29 year old son, Christopher, my son from my first marriage, says Kathy is his real mom and no longer speaks to his biological mom. 1984 we returned to Flint for a year to get custodial visitation BS cleared up with my ex. I worked at WFDF then moved to WWCK for a short period, wh...Expand for more
en I really started missing my wife who was pregnant with Sean. In 1995 I said farewell to broadcasting and started my own IT business, far surpassed the amount of return from broadcasting. I'm not retired (couldn't stand NOT working). But still keeping my fingers in V/O work and IT. For those of you who knew my sister, she passed away April 2, 1997 from metastasized breast cancer. My two best friends in High School were Barry Reyelts and Dave Weller. Barry's in Florida. Dave came out of the closet in around 1966. I spoke by phone with him around 74, he's since passed away in Chicago in June of 2000. And no I'm NOT gay, too far the opposite direction. I was rather intimidated regarding girls in High School. I remember Yvonne Hoxsey had to force me to put my arm around her for the rehearsals and performance of the Senior Play. A sophomore girl (name not divulged) asked me to take her home from a football game, she directed me via the backway to Winchester Village, and half way there grabbed my keys stuck them in her bra and told me to "go get 'em if you want to drive home". I was such a "confident, knowledgable" guy. All would have been proud of my half-hour of whining and pleading to get my keys back. Trust me...... I got over that!! I've never forgotten Diane Lavos (she was as quirky as I was), Georgina Lawrence, whom I really SHOULD have asked to the prom, but my fear got the best of me, Yvonne Hoxsey who was always so kind and down to earth and the "eye candy" girls of HS none of whom I probably ever spoke to, I'll list 'em, what'll they do?? Turn me into a Frog???? Sorry been through that stage already!! Judy Ptacek, Katey Schutt, Linda Batzer. But you know the person who had the greatest impact on me was Mr. Hester! What a Teacher!!! What a thinker! And he took the time to teach us HOW to think not just read our assignments. Enough babbling, I've said to much already, I feel senility setting in!! OR maybe I'm FINALLY reaching adulthood!! Good luck, Dragons!
