Thomas's Story
I have just a couple days left before my subscription runs out and I will be off this site. Follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I wish I didn't have to remind classmates from long ago who I was... but I was a quiet kid kept out of trouble. I wasn't a club joiner... I did play volleyball on and was the captain of the very first varsity team the school had. I had a lot of friends but as it goes over the years we have for the most part ... parted. Since LSC I have had what I consider a very lucky life. I married a few years after highschool and still married to the same girl. It was 46 years this past summer. We had a daughter who went to LSC setting records in track. And she played volleyball of course. She got a track scholarship to the University of Virginia.
In my carreer doors always seemed to open and I was always getting good jobs. I worked as a chemist in an R&D lab developing floor polish resins as no wax flooring came into vogue (well this job pick was not so good... but it opened doors). I worked in the tire industry where I became an engineer designing extrusion equipment and had the pleasure of working with some of the worlds best engineers in the field. I spent time in Japan as part of my job and made friends there that will be friends for life. Quietly over the years I began to write because of my interest in the outdoors and the environment. I even edited and published a magazine in my spare time. I slowly became an environmental activist. Studied and trained in a program with Sea Grant, the Great Lakes Leadershop Instit...Expand for more
ute. I have spoken before tens of thousands of people on issues regarding Aquatic Invasive Species, pollution and energy. I retired in 2007 to pursue my interests in the environment and to start a Fishing Charter Business. In 2016 I started another business from a hobby, custom fishing rod design and building. This business is growing quickly supplying rods to professional bass fishermen. I am lucky to have a wife who loves me enough to let me do my thing. Business was slow at first but now I am doing all I can handle. I have expanded from chartering on Lake Erie to now in the winters on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Okeechobee is the second largest lake within the continential US. I am doing what I really love fishing, taking about fishing, educating and raising the public awareness to protect our environment and to secure our outdoor traditions and heritage for future generations. I have recently been named to a group that is defining the harvest regulations for sport and commercial fishing on Lake Erie. Representatives from commercial and sport fishing from each state and Canada are meeting to determin a sustainable harvest plan for perch and walleye from Lake Erie.
It has been a long time since my days at LSC, I remember it and the people I knew well. I believe my experiences there helped shape the person I have become today. I still have the enthusiasm for life like I did back in the late 60's age is not slowing me down. I know we all thought we could change the world when we graduated.... I still think I can and have not stopped trying.
