Thomas's Story
After high school, I went to CPCC and took auto body repair and auto mechanics. I got drafted after that, and went to Viet Nam. When I got back home, I went to work for my father building car engines for about two years. Then I worked in a car parts warehouse for a while. After this I got married for the first time, what a 10 Year bummer. At this time I was a house painter, which lasted for 6 years. I got the chance to go work at Pelton and Crane in 1978. There we made dental equipment. I worked at this job for 19 1/2 years. I guess I was set in my ways and things were to comfortable to want to change jobs, but in 1998 the company was set to shut down. So I decided that I wanted to work at a home improvement warehouse. Some of the guys that worked with talked me in to going to work at Home Depot. I lasted 2 1/2 weeks and quit. I hated Home Depot before I went there and really hated it after I worked there. I sat around for 6 weeks looking for a job, filling out applications and interviewing for jobs. I really didn't know what I wanted to do being 49 years old. I guess I decided one morning I didn't give the home improvement business a good shot, so I went to Lowe's and got a job. Lowe's was a different world, it was so much more fun working there. nt department for 9 years, and made a lot friends that were my customers. In 2008 I had been getting tired of the politics at Lowe's, so one of my customers told why didn't I come to work with him at Presbyterian Hospital down town. So I checked in to it, and that's were I am now. I am the painter for the orthopaedic hospital across the street. This has been the coolest most laid back job I ever had. I hope to continue to work till I am 66, which gives me 4 more years to go. I guess that I forgot to mention my wife now, Dawn. We have been married since 1983. We don't have any children other than my 2 beautiful collies Bonnie and Bella. Dawn has a cat, Scrabble. I really enjoy doing a lot of things, wood working being the most enjoyable. I still do art work from time to time, and I do wood carving too. This summer I built a new storage building in my back yard. It had been 15 years since I built my garage and 20 since the front porch. I found out my old body can't take it so good anymore. I have a 1958 Chevy truck that I am restoring also. It has kinda been on hold for about 6 months. This has been my second restoration, I did 1962 Ford Galaxie in the early 1990's. I guess I stay busy all the time doing something. To sum this all up I guess I have had a pretty good life.
