Tim's Story
Computer geek...some called me "Goph".
I tried my hand at basketball...as a tall string bean, you'd think I would have been better. :) I ended up settling for tennis with Mr. Boggs as coach -- still wasn't my forte..but it was fun.
Thanks to the Prairie school board's foresight in requiring the class of '89 to take at least one computer coarse (or they could not graduate), I found my niche in computers. The late Mr. John Daniels taught computer programming class and between him, Mrs. Bender and issues of Family Computing, I started a hobby that would later turn into a career.
I worked at Jack's Discount through high school. Attended University of Northern Iowa's Computer Science program in 1989 and since I didn't party at all in high school...I managed to get my 4-year B.S. in 5 years ;)
During my last year at UNI, I rekindled a friendship with a former Jack's co-worker, Ann Novak (Jefferson, '89). After UNI, I received a job at MCI as a computer programmer. I was there for a year, then left for a dot-com company where I worked for 4 years and learned web developing. The dot-com company tanked with most of the others in 2000 and I chose to rejoin MCI, now Verizon Business,...Expand for more
where I have worked for the past 8 years.
Shortly after I joined MCI/MCI-Worldcom, the company's financial troubles became public and layoffs started happening quite frequently. In anticipation of getting hit by one, I started a side web design company called Willy O. Webs, L.L.C. that would hopefully tide us over in case I got axed. Though I've managed to weather 6 or so layoffs and am still employed there, I continue to do web work on the side.
Ann and I married shortly after we both graduated from U.N.I. in '96. Ann is a special education teacher for the Cedar Rapids Comm. School District. In November of 2006 Ann gave birth to our beautiful daughter, Kate, who is the spark of our lives. We are expecting twins in May of '09.
When at UNI, I finally discovered a sport I was decent at -- volleyball. I played on UNI's USAV club team, then joined a Cedar Rapids men's USAV team after graduation. We've been to many annual US Open Nationals in various US cities competing against teams around the country. I enjoy playing outdoor sand volleyball at Volley's as well as indoor volleyball league at Stoney Point YMCA.
Ann and I enjoy camping, hiking, and spending time with Kate.
