Tim's Story

Tim is from Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Tim's schools include Miraleste High School and Holy Trinity for grade school where he wore a uniform (that he hated) each day, and was taught by super strict nuns. He was an altar boy, sang in the church choir, and dutifully obeyed all the rules at the school so as not to get on the bad side of those strict nuns. Tim looks back on his time at HT with great humor, remembering things like: "pagan babies coin cans" that students were to fill with spare change that would eventually be distributed to "pagan babies in the world" (back then Tim actually believed there were "pagan babies" that needed this spare change, and would indeed receive it); Tim also remembers having to go to confession as a little boy and feeling really stressed at not knowing what "sins" to say to the priest in the "closet" (Tim insists he did nothing that would qualify as a "sin" when he was a little boy); and hating the taste of the wafer "host" that people received at "communion". He also thought, as a young boy, that "stations of the cross" and Rosaries were the most boring thing EVER. Despite all this, Tim tried his very best to be a good little Catholic boy while attending HT, as the nuns convinced Tim that if he was not a good boy, he risked being sent off to "eternal damnation" in Hell when he died--which, to a young boy, sounded "totally GNARLY!" Tim's experiences at "HT" made him REALLY appreciate the nice students and excellent teachers at Miraleste High School. It was the equivalent of shifting from a "negative format" of education to an "eternally positive" style of teaching, and was a needed breath of fresh air to a teenager that had grown quite weary of the nuns' strict ways. inistration created a wonderful environment of outstanding educational opportunities. The campus was gorgeous, with a panoramic view of LA, and the harbor. The campus even had a bit of a surf check, as on big days, you could see the white water spilling over at Cabrillo Pt, and that let you know a swell had arrived. There were a large number of exceptionally bright students attending MHS, and the teachers constantly challenged the students. Tim notes with some pride that his fellow classmates have frequently commented over the years on the wonderful academic and social experience that have served the school's alumni well throughout our adult lives. Tim feels extremely fortunate to have attended MHS, and remembers with great fondness the cheerful, supportive student population. Tim went to high school with a bunch of really NICE kids from really NICE families!!! And that, more than anything, is Tim's fondest memory of his high school days, Tim later attended San Diego State University, majoring in English. It was a bit of a challenge adjusting to such a large university, after attending a small high school. But he transitioned. It helped that a large contingent of friends from MHS came down to San Diego too, all in search of good, year round surf, pretty girls (or "foxy chicks" as Tim used to like to say), and lots of fun parties. The MHS crowd simply re-shifted from the PV hood to San Diego, making for many fun times during college. But there were classes, books to be read, exams to be taken and aced, and so Tim "grew up" (sort of) eventually, graduated, attended law school in San Diego, and became a lawyer in 1982. He has lived in San Diego County since 1974, and still enjoys surfing. One of Tim's favorite quotes is:""Most folks are just about as happy as they make their minds up to be"". Abe Lincoln.
