Tim's Story
I was one of those students that socially fit into all groups...but mostly ran with a close circle of friends - I keep in touch with many of these friends today. For me HS friendships are important. Other than family, I can't think of any group of people in our lives that we will spend so much time together and have so much in common.
During my senior year I started dating Shera Fullenwider. Shera was in the class of 73'. We both attended UNC and were married in December 76' - our senior year at UNC. With the exception of a short 1 year stint in Phoenix, we remained in the Denver area and had two wonderful kids together. Our son, Cole is 28 and is a 2003 graduate of AHS. Our daughter, Kirby just turned 22 and is a 2008 graduate of AHS. Kirby will graduate from CU Boulder this December. Unfortunately Shera and I divorced in 2011 after 34 years of marriage.
I have had an interesting career path, having spent most of my life in the advertising and marketing areas. From 1998 to 2008 I was Dir. of Marketing and Sports Sponsorships at The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. So this was a dream job and had the best perks ever. I basically managed all business partnerships with the Brocos, Rockies, Kroenke (Avalanche, Nuggets, Mammoth, Rapids), Crush, Grand Prix, Inte...Expand for more
rnational, etc....All of this meant I had tickets and VIP access to all games and events sponsored by the newspapers. Traveled with the teams and went on Corporate Sponsor trips ever year. The sponsorship I put in place with the Colorado Crush allowed me to fly with John Elway and 6 other newspaper guests on his private jet to las Vegas for a 3 day golf trip every year - fun stuff. Corporate trips to Mexico and Canada for me and my family. We were blessed and certainly lead a privileged life. But.....
My position was adjusted (new way of saying downsized) in 2008 and all good things came to an end. In 2009, I became VP of Marketing for a gold mining company in Montana. I still do some consulting work with that company. Currently I am the National Director of Sales for a Golden based company that provides funding to public schools via sponsorship investment by Fortune 500 companies.
I enjoy traveling anywhere warm (hawaii, caribbean islands) but spend a great deal of time at Lake Powell and in the Moab area as often as possible. Ten Saturday's each ski season, I volunteer to teach handicapped skiers with the National Sports Center for the Disabled at Winter Park.
Well, that's Tim Matthews in a nutshell. I look forward to seeing everyone in a couple of weeks.
