Tim's Story
In October of 1981, my oldest brother and I decided to move to California. I had visited there the year before on vacation. We packed up his Pinto and we set off for southern California. We stayed with a friend who happened to be returning from an overseas tour in Germany to Fort Irwin, a base outside of Barstow.
We stayed in Barstow a couple of weeks while trying to find a place of our own. One Sunday, we were checking at a house that had been converted into apartments. We spoke to the owner and explained our situation and he consented to rent to us. We now had our own place, but with limited funds, we needed to find jobs.
After one week of searching, I found a job at a plastics manufacturing plant , as a machine operator/adjuster. While working the swing shift, I began attending Control Data Institute in the mornings. Working there required me to move to the San Fernando Valley. So, I found an apartment in Canoga Park. While working there I had a few unusual opportunities such as flying by helicopter five miles off shore to a oil rig and going into a nuclear power plant. After eight years, I began an eight year career with a fax and copier dealership.
While living in Canoga Park, I found a church home at West Valley Christian Church. I was coaching one of their coed softball teams when I met a couple with whom I became good friends. At one of their daughters birthday parties, I was introduced to their cousin, Nevilyn. Nevilyn had grown up in the Philippines. In 1984, after graduating from college, she and her family had immigrated to California.
We began a long distance relationship, living about 40 miles apart. We were engaged in 1991 and we were married in 1992. Late that year, we had our first child, a boy. In 1997, we were blessed with our second child, a girl.
In 2001, I began working in the oil industry where I am still employed today.
